taking away the guns of Americans?
Gun owners react adversely to any discussion of gun control and always say that the Feds want to take away their guns. What these gun owners do is dig in more, buy more guns and say that if anyone comes to take away their guns - they'll fight them.
How do they think - what Trump calls - 'illegal immigrants' feel when they are threatened with being rounded up and deported.
Is there any empathy between gun owners and so-called illegal immigrants because of the irrationality of these two things?
I think you just found the lynch pin. IF Rump can round up 'illegals' what is the slippery slope to 'illegals' meaning gun owners? No no no...that would never enter their minds. Too roided up on guns and bullets to see that.
Good one!

(25,242 posts)Trump & the Repugs wanting to round up the undocumented (a better term than illegal) immigrants where she says the following:
"I find it the height of irony that a party which espouses small government would want to unleash a massive government effort, which might include national guard and others, to go and literally pull people out of their homes and their workplaces, round them up and, I don't know, put them in buses or boxcars, in order to take them across the border. I find that absurd but appalling. And that's why I support comprehensive immigration reform."
Many of the gun owners that would support such a round-up of undocumented immigrants would revolt if the same thing was proposed to do the same to them and take away their guns. (i.e., a massive government effort, which might include national guard and others, to go and literally pull guns out of homes and workplaces......
That's kind of where I was going with my OP. One would think that gun owners would be empathetic with undocumented immigrants because of the similarities.
Instead I think we're seeing - we'll let it happen to them (immigrants) but don't let it happen to me (gun owner).
Does that make any sense - or am I stretching things?

(65,616 posts)No I don't think that is a stretch at all! They would NEVER be betrayed by their own leaders (even thought you and I know they get betrayed daily) so it is OK for one group to be treated like chattle...but not for THEIR group. The thought wouldn't even occur to them.
Both groups are oppressed and taken advantage of, should be the way the GOP mind works. I think the huge disconnect is because of racism and lack of empathy overall. I also believe that is a standard trait of the GOP and one that does keep them from sympathizing with other groups. It seems strange to progressive that a person could live without empathy of some kind. However that is the GOP prime trait imo.
I would say white gun owners (that are scared of Obama grabbing their toys)as a collective, are more like xenophobic societies than anything else.

(16,199 posts)I myself support a complete amnesty. I once was pretty opposed to many gun laws, but I've shifted away from that position over the years. I'm now adamant that a permit to purchase with full background check, an interview to detect unlawful intent, and a safety class should be a requirement in every state. Sure, provide an appeals process for rejections, but such a system of laws would have denied the last several mass shooters their gun while allowing normal citizens a right to buy and own in accordance with the Constitution.

(65,616 posts)The "Obama is coming for my guns" crowd is anything but rational. SO it makes sense they would never come to realize they could be next!

(6,409 posts)Where I live, many of them think Obama is importing illegal Mexicans and allowing them to vote, probably several times each, for socialist Democrats who want to confiscate their guns. Not much common ground there.

It's funny how undocumented Poles, Irish, Russians, Eastern Europeans aren't grafted into the hate discourse surrounding this.

(16,199 posts)There are 55 million Hispanics in the USA, most citizens. To conduct a round-up would require all to be subjected to massive profiling and ID Checks (Your papers please) anytime they were out in public.

(23,156 posts)Unless you see every single thing as a "slippery slope".
However, you might possibly want to compare rounding up illegal immigrants to the rounding up of Jews and other undesirables by the Nazis, although deportation is not very much like death camps.
I rather suspect that gun owners feel empathy toward illegal immigrants if and only if they are already the sort of person who would feel such compassion. Some gun owners would, others wouldn't.
