(15,241 posts)Unfortunately, most people that have bought into (or having been paid into) a position have a hard time giving it up. Sometimes hitting their personal bottom is the best way towards recovery as a rational person.

(8,032 posts)...Muslims are prolife, antigay, misogynist, antihygeine, prohibitionist.
The mirror image of a stereotype is also a stereotype.
No offense intended...just a thought experiment.

(8,032 posts)But that's an implication suggested in the OP. Otherwise, why is it grouped with the other negatives?
I have many times heard unkind comments about Muslim headgear and Muslim facial hair.

(33,982 posts)Some assholes keep saying he's a secret Muslim. This is just pointing out all the things he does that do not jive with Islamic based beliefs. It in no way implies Muslim is bad. It's showing a delta, not demonizing.

(8,032 posts)I get that assholes keep saying that he's a secret Muslim. Why is being "accused" of being a Muslim a bad thing? If we assume the stereotype, aren't we complicit in it?
Further, do you agree that antifeminism, homophobia, and suppression of abortion rights are typical of "Islamic based beliefs"?
Do you see where I'm coming from?
AtheistCrusader
(33,982 posts)It's doubly insulting in this case, because not only is it an extension of the 'Kenyan' smear (which is actually a form of racism the way they are using it, on top of xenophobic), but it's that they don't even recognize one of their own. (People attacking the President in this way typically identify as Christian themselves, but they are Right wing politically, not Left.) No, I will happily stand up and point out the President is a Christian. Same assholes that insist on calling Caitlyn Jenner a man. She identifies as Female. That's her choice, not theirs to define her. You don't address that problem by piping up 'so what if he's a man, what's wrong with that'. That would be stark raving ridiculous.
It's never a 'bad thing' to correct the record, especially when people are lying to hurt someone else.
The three issues you just identified are typical of Catholic beliefs as well, so makes no nevermind if Islamic or Christian in this case (for some sects of Christian, also true of Muslims, as some countries that are Muslim still protect women's rights, or varying degrees thereof.). The pope has stated that homosexuality is 'internally disordered'. That same sex couples adopting children is a "form of discrimination against the child". That's homophobia. The Catholic church works tirelessly to deny women not only Abortion, but family planning of any means. That's not a stereotype, that's in the charter. (doctrine) They vote to curtail it. They lobby against it, they spend millions on it, and in countries where they are dominant voter blocs, they have a chokehold on it.

(8,032 posts)Loss of focus dilutes the power of any line of argument. This isn't about Catholics, or Obama's alleged Christian beliefs. (BTW, it's common political knowledge he is agnostic at best - a plus in my book.) And I still don't understand how it can "hurt" the prez to "accuse" him of being Muslim unless being Muslim is a bad thing. Do you think that? I don't.
What this is about is *not* reinforcing stereotypes. My original post was intended to stimulate reflection about how we can unintentionally reinforce stereotypes if we merely proclaim their opposites.
AtheistCrusader
(33,982 posts)These are non- issues in this context, as I already specified a Christian sect of major political power in the U.S. That holds the same position. It would be a distinction without a difference. (the president is a different sect of Christian.)
You brought it up, not me.
The 'secret muslim' lie is part and parcel of a wider collection of 'secret socialist like his parents', Kenyan, and a whole pile of other lies rolled together, to discredit the first Black President.
Again, I refer you to the same crowds sexist, crude attacks on Jenner as an example of why you don't always just say 'so what if x is y' as a counterpoint. You'd actually be granting their smear is true. That's all they want.

(23,946 posts)other religion, say Baptists, who are also very much anti-gay etc. and then maybe the insult is clear.
The people who think Obama is a Muslim don't think he's a "normal" Muslim. They think he wants to establish an Islamic theocracy, destroy Israel so that Muslims gain control of Jerusalem, persecute Christians, those sort of things, all on behalf of allies in Hamas, Hezbollah, ISIS, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and/or basically every other "scary" fundamentalist Muslim group or government.
And yet a cursory glance not only at his personal life but his foreign and domestic policies as President makes this accusation baseless.

(15,241 posts)Besides the "fuck" is not text - it is part of an image. I'm guessing DU's censors don't do image/OCR to weed out the scurrilous shite.
In all cases, what a glorious photo. I hope this guy can keep enjoying life with his incredible wife and children. I see another ex-president that is as wonderful as Jimmy Carter (can't think of any other in recent memory.)

My phone app dictionary wanted to know, "Did you mean crapulent? Had to look that up, too. "Sick from gross excess in drinking or eating."

(15,241 posts)A humorous neologism coined by television writer David X. Cohen. It first appeared in the 1996 Simpsons episode Lisa the Iconoclast.

Used in an ironical sense to mean legitimate, and therefore, in reality, spurious and not at all legitimate. Assumes common knowledge of the inherent Simpsons reference.
