Let us not forget what the Contempt Ruling in Kentucky Really means.

Last edited Fri Sep 4, 2015, 08:52 PM - Edit history (3)

It means couples like April Miller and Karen Roberts can FINALLY get married tomorrow. It means rule of law has won! It is tempting to get carried away in the drama of moment and fixate upon the lawbreaker who abused her power...but we must not do that.

It is about love once again overcoming hate. It is about the triumph of equality before the law. It is about people who were wronged finally getting their rights respected.

The bigot doesn't even deserve us using her name. Let us forget her and instead let us celebrate the triumph of the couples who fought her and remember their names instead!

SHANTEL BURKE & STEPHEN NAPIER

Today was their victory...not the bigot Clerks! Let celebrate for them and congratulate them on finally getting their marriage license!!!

to issue, but apparently are not able to, without her authorization, which she has refused to give. Unless I missed a more recent update, this seems like it remains a stalemate.

and had she simply given her approval they would have released her. But she didn't and now she will go to jail and the deputies will be issuing licenses tomorrow regardless.

I am not trying to argue, just explain my understand. I am probably wrong.

HOWEVER, regardless of whether the licenses are issued tomorrow or not, I feel that we have given this hateful woman too much attention and not enough to the couples whose lives have been turned into a circus because of her.

If nothing else, this post humanizes them and lets us know their names.

warned any who receive these licenses that there may be issues with validity without the county clerk's signature. So, still limbo-land, it seems.

...whilst the couples in question should be entitled to their day of joy as quickly as possible, the legal ambiguity of their marriage license is something that may follow them throughout their marriage. There are so many institutions that could make this the rationale for not providing these couples with their future marital rights...employers, health care providers, insurance companies. At every step of the way, these pioneers will be exposed to risks that SCOTUS and Bunning never intended.

They have have made their case and that's a good thing. At the same time, I think their financial advisors would tell them this might be the time for some patience and ensure that they're not exposing themselves to unnecessary risk because of this a-hole clerk's obstinance.

Davis' lawyers questioned whether a Rowan County marriage license issued without Davis' authorization would be valid. But other lawyers in the courtroom, including Rowan County Attorney Cecil Watkins, said deputy clerks could issue marriage licenses, too.

I mean, what do you do when your county position is not being upheld, because you are in jail, the hospital, on maternity or sick leave? There has to be a way to have someone fill in for her.

“I, _____, do swear that I will well and truly discharge the duties of the office of _____ County Circuit Court clerk, according to the best of my skill and judgment, making the due entries and records of all orders, judgments, decrees, opinions and proceedings of the court, and carefully filing and preserving in my office all books and papers which come to my possession by virtue of my office; and that I will not knowingly or willingly commit any malfeasance of office, and will faithfully execute the duties of my office without favor, affection or partiality, so help me God.”

Her so-called religion means nothing.

Marriage equality is the law of the land. I am glad I finally got to change my signature line of the last 2 or 3 years (it was "there are two types of people in the world- those who support marriage equality and those who are assholes&quot .
