... Sadly, Dallas parents seem to not be nearly as concerned about this naming issues as are those in Houston. The change.org petition seeking to change the names of Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson elementaries is still only at 141 names. Its growing at the scathing rate of 20 new signatures a month ...

I must say, I never will understand how anyone with any decency could think a school that is 98% minority should be named for a racist like Jeff Davis

(2,681 posts)This is an old school built in the late 40's and was named Jefferson Davis then. The neighborhood was new at the time and white families lived there. If I remember correctly, there was not problem when the school was renamed to Barbara Jordon. The reason it was renamed was because it had become a school of minority students. There may have been some blow-hards protesting, but they didn't amount to a hill of beans and did not live in this neighborhood. The neighborhood, including the many whites who still live around here, were all for the name change. I have lived in this area for over 30 years and love the diversity of our neighborhood. And there are two main streets in Oak Cliff that run parallel to each other, Jefferson and Davis, no one seems to care about this.
