I'd hate to think the American public is paying to protect him. You'd think the Kochs would be paying to protect their shitty investment.

It was notable how early Obama received protection.

Edited to add: none of the candidates except Hillary has Secret Service protection. She receives it since she's a former First Lady

It's possible Hillary is, as the wife of a former President, but I don't know about that. Anyone who has been to any of her events would be able to tell us.

In 2013 Obama signed a law reinstating lifetime protection for Bush, himself and all future presidents.

Clinton had lifetime protection under the old law, so it was not necessary to include him.

She has it by virtue of being a former FLOTUS.

None of the others have SS protection yet. Obama had SS protection early in 2008 due to the incredibly high number of credible threats to his life and the lives of his family.

I was stuck on the working definition of "candidate". I didn't know if that took effect after the Primaries, after the Conventions or would it apply to anyone who has a little credibility and says "I wanna be president" ?

If this is a credible website: http://uspolitics.about.com/od/CampaignsElections/a/Secret-Service-Protection-For-Presidential-Candidates.htm

The big variable is ... anyone can get protection if Obama says they get protection.

Because of threats against him.

Especially when you read this from CBS during the 2008 election:

The military-run White House Communications Agency comes up with the names in coordination with the Secret Service.

Here's a look at the code names the candidates and their spouses have been given. Note that each couple's names start with the same letter.

John McCain - Code name: Phoenix

Cindy McCain - Code name: Parasol

Other pairs from 2008:

Obamas: Renegade/Renaissance
Bidens: Celtic/Capri
Palins: Denali/Driller

So... given that it'd be the WH Communications Agency coming up with the code names, not the candidates themselves (although their own suggestions for monikers are pretty hilarious and/or revealing....) what could we expect?

I'll start off with the Walkers, as a bye-bye, don't let it hit'cha, gesture: Limburger/Lollipop

I'm sure everyone here has some suggestions for others....

provocatively,
Bright
