Verizon slaps couple with $2 million bill for plan they had for one month

Slusher signed up with the cellular company in November of last year and purchased two phones. He cancelled the plan after only a month, returning the phones to the store, due to discrepancies in the bill.

A bill that should have been $120 was $698 and included a previous balance of $451. And then a followup statement arrived indicating a balance of $9.

Huh? Slusher was astonished by Verizon's math.

"The number of errors and the comedy of which they happened is astounding to me," he told Fox 12.

Notices started arriving from collection agencies asking for $2,000 and more, and Slusher found himself battling customer service for months. They would agree something was amiss but nobody could fix it.

When Slusher called Monday, he heard the account balance was $2 million. This became a problem when he was signing papers for mortgage on a home he and Wilson are trying to buy.

"If I don't get this straightened out in the next 24 hours, I can almost guarantee I'll lose this house," he told Fox 12.

He and his wife were adopting a baby in another country. He was working remotely and neglected to purchase the correct plan for cell and data usage.

...live (Sarasota, FL) there's one. Worse damn thing is WE invented the internet.

PS. Maybe I should also count Hughes satellite but it's expensive and a little bit faster than dial-up.

Here in Lakeland the only decent choice we have is BrightHouse Cable. And I think I heard they have been sold to Time Warner which has a horrid reputation. Verizon has FiOS but they only install their fibre in gated communities or other places where they can expect a return on their investment.

My credit was crap at the time and they wanted a $500 deposit which I did not have so I left. I got some stuff in the mail from them but just figured it was junk mail. A couple of months later I get a letter from a collection agency saying I owe Cingular something like $80 for unpaid bills. I called them up and talked at brick walls all afternoon telling them I never had a phone. Even though no one could find a phone number for my phantom phone I was continually told I did have a phone with them.

I finally got through to the second manager I talked to after asking for my $500 deposit back. I said I’d be happy to pay the $80 if they gave me my deposit back. When he said they didn’t have a deposit I asked how I got the phone. That finally got through to him.

And good riddance.

To be fair, one small bit of praise for Verizon: A staffer at the Verizon Store in Hoboken, named April, was helpful to me in dealing with one aspect of the transition. She was assisted by a helpful and knowledgeable co-worker whose name I did not catch (but who was wearing a Tom Brady jersey, for all you Patriot haters out there).

My thanks to those two, and to hell with the rest of the company.
