Seems to me he's pre-empted the Pope's message. The cable news shows - like vultures - gravitated to coverage of Boehner's resigning and it took the edge off of the Pope's message.
Now they are back to showing the Pope - but I bet they can't wait until the Pope has finished his speech at the UN so they can get back to over-analyzing Boehner's resignation.

(26,262 posts)Something really awkward about him breaking the news, right after his tear-fest, yesterday. Almost, and I do mean ALMOST, sounds impulsive. I read that he was planning on retiring at the end of the year, so something pushed him to do this, today.

(6,457 posts)He should wait until the Pope has finished speaking at the UN. Not very respectful of him.

(17,663 posts)meeting annd cutting deals with business leaders, inc Boeing...????? Or that he announced a cap and trade committment on climate change, which may open the way for real moves at the big climate meeting??
Enough with the pope...it all sounds nice except his Church has screwed around enough in our politics to the detriment of non--Catholics on major issues.

(15,429 posts)It makes perfect sense to do this on a Friday during a big news event. Softens the impact somewhat.

(7,017 posts)Maybe he realized what he has done and is doing is not a Christian way to live. I don't begrudge anyone for shedding a tear now and then. Let's face it meeting the Pope is a big deal for Catholic.

(1,151 posts)Lots of things happen at the same time in the world. Sometimes announcements are planned to coincide with something else. Sometimes they just happen when they are ready.
The budget is on a pretty tight timeline right now and it's possible he just needed to get out of the way. He's still there publicly but I'd guess that he's out of the way as far as back room negotiations go. Or maybe this was his concession to get his way on the budget - he announces retirement and those who want him gone don't shutdown the government.
We may never know if he or Hillary gave the Pope's visit a second thought in determining the best time for their announcements. But we can argue forever that they should have. I'll give them both the benefit of the doubt that they did what was right for them and their announcement and weren't trying to undermine the pope or bury their announcement in pope news.

(25,245 posts)weasel words. It was the convenient thing for her campaign to say something about Keystone. I really don't think it got anywhere near the coverage that Boehner is getting on his resignation announcement.
