MEP takes swipe at SYRIZA wage pledges

SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras returned to Greece on Wednesday after his trip to France and Germany but his party's positions were slammed by leading MEP Daniel Cohn-Bendit.

Tsipras met with Interior Minister Antonis Roupakiotis and asked him to suspend all measures reducing wages and salaries as well as allowing collective contracts to continue to apply. The caretaker government does not have the authority to take any such actions.

SYRIZA was rebuffed a few days ago in its attempt to form an alliance with Greece’s Ecologist Greens and yesterday the vice president of the Greens–European Free Alliance group in Parliament, Cohn-Bendit, slammed the leftist party’s proposals on wages. He said plans to reverse wage cuts and set the minimum salary at 1,300 euros per month was “crazy” and “completely idiotic.” “Everyone knows the coffers are empty,” he said. “With what money are they going to pay these wages if Europe does not provide any more help?”
