What does America look like and where is it going?

(562 posts)and the USSC sez the law is upheld, after a force retirement of Scalia and Thomas due to degenerative brain disease that affects only extreme right-wing demagogue and with marijuana, helps them get back to sanity.
Obama also gets away with upgrading ACA to single payer health care plan, effectively removing insurance companies out of the health care business.
Economy is strong - after all the FTA's are cancelled, and the tariffs are imposed, and H1B's are sent back to wherever they came from and start using Americans for American jobs. The changes from fossil fuel to electric and solar is ongoing, but has made major strides in the last 4 years. Corporations wishing to repatriate their funds to the US will be punished by a hefty 75% tax on the top 10 management level people, including capital gain taxes and dividends. At that time, it will be the employee's market once again, not employer's market.
Citizen United has been utterly destroyed thanks to the wisdom of the USSC realizing the error of their ways by overturning CU with the Montana decision.

(8,153 posts)Prisons are overflowing with new inmates. The Supreme Court has ruled that habeas corpus no longer applies. Not only is marijuana still illegal, penalties have been strengthened.
Resource wars are flaring up around the world and the U.S. can no longer afford to respond. Oil is at $200/bbl and rising. Water rationing has begun in the Western U.S.

I like and support Obama, but I realize he is only one man.

(13,812 posts)Repugs are taking the WH and the congress because democrats failed to be bold in their leadership. The 1% is happy things are going well for them as always. In eight years the parties will change seats again so the electorate thinks they have a say in the way things are managed and the 1% will all but pee themselves over the thought.
Anyone want to bet?

(23,864 posts)...get a little worse, seats-wise.
We have a huge deficit of seats in the House. IIRC, we're down more than 25 seats there. In the Senate I don't have the numbers. Let's say everything stays the same, Senate, House and Presidency-wise. It's basically going to be 4 more years of the same. If I knew a little more about the Senate situation, maybe I'd be more optimistic.
But really, I'm now quite accustomed to the New Normal: Not only is very little done, but Repuke legislation is the norm so long as we do not have a Democratic President, a majority in the house and a 60 seat majority in the Senate. Every single one of those criteria has to be met or it's Repukes run the show, apparently.
In other words, I'm getting used to the concept that I need to start restructuring my life to accommodate an even further grinding of this country into a police state. I have little hope of any viable defense, save possibly withdrawing concern for national politics and desperately trying to use state politics as a firewall for this fascism. In Oregon, strong states rights would be a good thing to keep the Federal police state drone at bay, hopefully. I know I'm kind of lying to myself even then.

(2,307 posts)The economy is much better.
Unemployment is back to "normal"
LGBT can marry.
No one dies because they don't have health insurance.
We are in NO wars.
The defense budget is much smaller.
The social safety nets are being repaired.
Student debt is forgive if it can be proven the college degree isn't worth the paper it is printed on.
Reasonable regulation on the banking industry.
The SCOTUS has a real balance.
FOX, Limbaugh, Bech, and the like are off the air.
The tea baggers are in their electrified pins. (just joking).
The real question needs to include if there is a Republican majority in either the Senate or House. Unless there is a clean sweep then we are looking at 4 more years of total grid lock with Republicans wanting to destroy America to prove Obama is a bad president.
What if it is Rmoney who is president
The economy is much better FOR THE RICH.
Unemployment is worst for the lower class.
LGBT cannot marry.
Health insurance for the rich.
We are in 2 wars, possibly one including nuclear weapons.
The defense budget is much bigger.
The social safety nets have been destroyed.
Student debt is out of control with Proprietary Colleges selling degrees not worth the paper they are printed on.
Less regulation on the banking industry.
The SCOTUS is 6-3 conservative.
FOX, Limbaugh, Bech, and the like are louder than ever.

Even during the 2013-2014 years, when the Senate was barely "controlled" by the Democrats, the little-mentioned (at least in the "liberally-biased media", where MSNBC now has most shows hosted by or co-hosted by Conservatives/"former" Republicans) "filibuster" used on nearly everything.
Yet another battle over abortion is set to go to the Supreme Court, with ever-tightening restrictions on women's reproductive rights being put in place by Republican legislators (so that anything could actually get done in Congress, they tack on poison pill after poison pill).
