Rurals still lag on transgender issues
I want to think the best of my fellow Nevadans, including those who live in the cow counties.
But after seeing what happened in Elko last week, I began to wonder about our rural brethren. I will not paint with a broad brush at least not yet. But what the school board did vis-a-vis a transgender student, especially after what happened a few months ago in Carson City, brought to mind more Strother Martin in Cool Hand Luke than Lou Bergevin or Dean Rhoads or John Carpenter in the Legislative Building.
What we have here, my dear Elkoans, is a failure to communicate.
In case you missed it, the school trustees unanimously voted to deny a transgender boy the right to use a bathroom that reflects his gender identity.
You are responsible as educators and school board members to make the decision that is best for all students, Michelle Gonzalez told the board of her 13-year-old son, as the Elko Daily Free Press Lauren Deane reported. My son has the right to live his life as a boy.
Not in Elko he doesnt.
What followed was a procession of ignorance, with three Nevada lawmakers at the front of the parade."
*Its time for Brian Sandoval and others to speak up about what happened in Elko. Ignorance is a dangerous disease, and unless some prominent people follow Edmund Burkes famous dictum, this will be a problem until the cows come home.
