ACLU Sues Catholic Hospitals Who Would Let Women Die Rather Than Perform Abortions

Everyone knows that the Catholic Church hates abortion. That is their right under the First Amendment, of course. However, that is where things get complicated. The Catholic Church also runs many hospitals. To that end, they insert their stance on abortion, contraceptives, and other vital reproductive healthcare issues into the running of these medical institutions. That goes up to and including denying women abortions even if it risks their lives. Well, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) hopes to change all of that.
On Thursday, October 1, the national ACLU and the ACLU of Michigan have decided to go public with a lawsuit they are filing against the Trinity Health Corporation, which is among the largest hospital systems in the nation. The lawsuit addresses their willingness to endanger the lives of the women who come to them in distress and for treatment because of the Churchs and by extension, the hospitals draconian stance on abortion.
There have been several cases that have prompted this broad and sweeping lawsuit, including the case of a woman named Jessica Mann, who is suffering from a brain tumor that makes it ill-advised and possibly life-threatening for her to become pregnant again. Genesys Hospital was presented with a letter demanding a medically necessary exception, but the exception was denied.

(27,985 posts)You shouldn't go to a Catholic hospital and expect you will get decent care.
At all. Especially if you're a women or might be facing end-of-life decisions. In fact, try, at all possible costs to avoid one. Tell your loved ones and put in advanced medical directives that you want nothing to do with them. The problem is that many poor have no choice so dogma is given priority over your health.

This is such an important issue. The ACLU is suing other catholic hospitals for this as well.

(21,691 posts)Many devout Catholics, however, see suffering as a gift - a way to experience what Jesus did on the cross. Besides being morbid and inhumane, it's not what hospitals are supposed to do.

(19,348 posts)They have no compunction about murdering a woman to fulfill their putrid and ignorant bronze age beliefs.
The RCC takeover of our hospitals is a security concern.

(63,221 posts)My mother died in childbirth in a catholic hospital. The thing is, she wasn't even catholic, she was Protestant. My father was the catholic one. I know the doctor had to move away to Florida after her death - either because it was an accident or otherwise should not have happened - nobody will tell me the truth about it. My brother lived.
I have always wondered if the doctor had made the decision to sacrifice her life in order to save my brother. I don't know if I will ever find out.

(95,337 posts)we have two in town both less than a mile from my home. But the catholic one is blocks away. As a woman I want to know that the hospital I would be taken to if I was raped (God forbid) would give me emergency contraception without question immediately. The other place would.

I too have a card in my wallet saying that I am not to be admitted to a Roman Catholic Hospital.
