"...the polio vaccine was derived from the cells involuntarily taken form the womb of a dying cancer patient, not from a fetus."

to meet demand. ETA: Salk had developed his vaccine a few years before, however, and much of his and others' research relied on fetal stem cells. HeLas were used to produce it on a large scale.

It doesn't matter. We already know what happens when abortion is illegal and we are not going back.

When abortion is illegal, women die of illegal abortions. Abortion didn't start with Roe, women stopped dying of illegal abortions with Roe.

Whose cells made the polio vaccine has no bearing on whether abortion should be legal or not.

My body. My choice. Women who decide on abortions have no commonalty to a polio vaccine. As a woman and part of the larger world sisterhood, I want to prevent the unnecessary deaths that result from both unchecked disease and the sexist laws men pass to subjugate and diminish the basic rights of women to determine her own future.

I think the fetal tissue is now used for research as it is a cleaner line of cells and has less chance of spreading something unknown.

Illegal abortions meant that using fetal tissues from abortions was both highly illegal and highly incriminating to any doctor who was even peripherally involved. Doctors could lose their medical licenses. So fetal tissues had to come from miscarriages, not abortions.
