Regarding the not so good people; abandoning them now wouldn't teach them a lesson, at least not a good one. It would simply harden their attitudes.

Instead, we need to set an example of good behavior by helping. Maybe some of them will learn from that. And if they don't, at least we'll know that we did the right thing whether they appreciate it or not.

bless their tiny hearts and pointy little heads

But I think payback is usually a waste of time and energy in Congress

On the other hand, a barrage of citizen letters to various local SC papers might sway some minds

I'm thinking of something like

"SC Representative Tiny Heart voted against Federal funding for disaster relief for other states after Hurricane Sandy, but I notice he was happy to vote for Federal disaster relief for SC after Hurricane Joaquin. Although most of Americans are willing to help their fellow citizens when disaster strikes, it is disappointing to see SC continue to elect people who expect help when they need it, but are unwilling to give the same to others when others need it. Attitudes like that can create unnecessary hard feelings; and then some speculation naturally follows about exactly when SC plans to set aside its resentments from the late unpleasantness between the states back in great-great-great-grandpop's day. It will be a great day when we can all again make common cause to build an ever-better country."

Of course, they do have some sorry leadership, and there are more people that identify as Republican there than there are people there that identify as Democrats, but the split is only 44-39.

There are no 'blue' states or 'red' states, just purple ones. Punishing a state because it has more people from the 'other team' than it does from our own team, is pretty much exactly the same thing that they were trying to do after hurricane Sandy. I hope we're a lot better than that.

The voters(majority) got exactly what they wanted, representation that denies the needs of others like Hurricane Sandy victims...and then they forget how they voted, like Senator Graham did!

Do you think being "better" is going to change the way the 44% think?

I made a comment yesterday and realized it was wrong to say what I said, and while being the better person is admirable...there comes a time when the choice is being the better ones or just get abused by those that hate our guts!!!

I was intentionally deceptive. I was trying to get some jerk with no compassion at all to chime in with some kind of "right on!" or something stupid like that. So no problem.

The idiots who post crap like this have probably never even considered the probability there is at least one Democrat living on every freaking street in this country. Every. Freaking. Street. That's why I get so angry at those south bashing idiots who seem to crawl out from under their rock every day (I find they're usually from that hole called the Northeast LOL).

If you go back and look at the thread I linked, I was the first to call out the hatred. Then of course the dufus says he didn't say what he said... Yeah; not in so many words. The hatred in that thread is breathtaking and makes me wonder how some of those people make it through the day with so much hatred in their hearts. On top of everything, the dufus who started that thread called MY posts in that thread inflammatory, LOL.

It's a good thing the Dems in Congress are better people than me, they'll vote for SC assistance.

Most of the Repubs won't, but the Dems will send the money. Then the people in South Carolina will return their climate-change-denying, cut-welfare-for-those-other-people, we're so much better Christians than you, Reps back to Congress.

Sigh.

How long will it be that they propose federal funding for their state.

And the people in South Carolina would vote these people in again and again. If that hurricane had hit NY or NJ their delegation would vote AGAINST funding again and again.

If the US sends money to South Carolina, will the money go to her, or to rebuild coastal mansions? Like the Bush mansion in Kennebunkport or the Trent Lott mansion in Mississippi, rebuilt with tax dollars.

South Carolina leaders are climate deniers who did their part to create this problem. South Carolina leaders are known for not allowing public benefits to trickle down to the citizens who need them.

Tough sell to demand money be sent to the leaders the people of South Carolina have chosen.

Seriously.

The majority of voters in 5 of 6 congressional districts send demonstrably ignorant people to DC as their reps. They are proud of their anti-science, anti-environment stances.

In a very real sense, the people of SC brought this on themselves. As a very pragmatic matter, we should demand they WAKE UP in return for any money sent their way.

Won't happen, of course, but I can squawk about it.
