Instead, we need to set an example of good behavior by helping. Maybe some of them will learn from that. And if they don't, at least we'll know that we did the right thing whether they appreciate it or not.

But I think payback is usually a waste of time and energy in Congress
On the other hand, a barrage of citizen letters to various local SC papers might sway some minds
I'm thinking of something like
"SC Representative Tiny Heart voted against Federal funding for disaster relief for other states after Hurricane Sandy, but I notice he was happy to vote for Federal disaster relief for SC after Hurricane Joaquin. Although most of Americans are willing to help their fellow citizens when disaster strikes, it is disappointing to see SC continue to elect people who expect help when they need it, but are unwilling to give the same to others when others need it. Attitudes like that can create unnecessary hard feelings; and then some speculation naturally follows about exactly when SC plans to set aside its resentments from the late unpleasantness between the states back in great-great-great-grandpop's day. It will be a great day when we can all again make common cause to build an ever-better country."

Aside from the fact that this would actually play into the hands of these idiots, you would be punishing at the very least African Americans who are living in that state, and a lot of other good people who do not consider themselves "rednecks" who like to fly the confederate flag.

(2,251 posts)Of course, they do have some sorry leadership, and there are more people that identify as Republican there than there are people there that identify as Democrats, but the split is only 44-39.
There are no 'blue' states or 'red' states, just purple ones. Punishing a state because it has more people from the 'other team' than it does from our own team, is pretty much exactly the same thing that they were trying to do after hurricane Sandy. I hope we're a lot better than that.

(16,799 posts)The leadership isn't what's sorry I would put that label on the voters that elect them.
The voters(majority) got exactly what they wanted, representation that denies the needs of others like Hurricane Sandy victims...and then they forget how they voted, like Senator Graham did!
Do you think being "better" is going to change the way the 44% think?
I made a comment yesterday and realized it was wrong to say what I said, and while being the better person is admirable...there comes a time when the choice is being the better ones or just get abused by those that hate our guts!!!
Captain Stern
(2,251 posts)But I think that being 'just as bad' might change the way that the 39% of the people there that are Democrats think.

The idiots who post crap like this have probably never even considered the probability there is at least one Democrat living on every freaking street in this country. Every. Freaking. Street. That's why I get so angry at those south bashing idiots who seem to crawl out from under their rock every day (I find they're usually from that hole called the Northeast LOL).

South Carolina leaders are climate deniers who did their part to create this problem. South Carolina leaders are known for not allowing public benefits to trickle down to the citizens who need them.
Tough sell to demand money be sent to the leaders the people of South Carolina have chosen.

(2,161 posts)Seriously.
The majority of voters in 5 of 6 congressional districts send demonstrably ignorant people to DC as their reps. They are proud of their anti-science, anti-environment stances.
In a very real sense, the people of SC brought this on themselves. As a very pragmatic matter, we should demand they WAKE UP in return for any money sent their way.
