The country music superstar is giving away 25 mortgage-free houses one for each stop on his upcoming "Brothers of the Sun" tour with Kenny Chesney to wounded or needy service members.
McGraw will kick off the campaign with a Memorial Day concert for military members at New York City's Beacon Theatre during Fleet Week.
"My sister's a veteran, my uncle's a veteran, my grandfather was a veteran, one of my best friends is a veteran," McGraw said in an interview. "I've known people my whole life who are in service to America. And I think in my position to be able to do something like that is probably the ultimate thing. So to be able to go on tour and provide sort of a stable foundation for a veteran and their family is something I really look forward to."

He is a Democrat as is his wife Faith Hill along with Brad Paisley and Kimberly Williams-Paisley. Not all country musicians are crazy!!!

(4,876 posts)how many country musicians are Dems... Besides Paisley and McGraw you have Willie Nelson, Keith Urban, Dierks Bentley, Darius Rucker, Taylor Swift, Jewel, I believe Kenny Chesney is as well. There are more I'm sure..
Funny thing is, it used to be verboten, if you were a Dem you didn't mention it to anyone. Now days people are speaking out a bit more. Paisley endorsed Obama in 08 and will again this year.
Quick story, I was working on the crew for a mid sized country act and we played a festival where the headliner was Hank Jr. Now I have always hated Hank Jr, not for his politics but because he's a fucking asshole. His question before he hits the stage is usually "how long do I have to play to get paid"...
So the opening acts play and the crowd waits for Jr. And waits, and waits... Jr finally comes out, stewed to the gills as usual, and just starts ranting about the "ni**er in the White House". Of course the audience loved it, but backstage was another story. I can't name names but 3 of the acts grabbed their shit and left vowing never to work anywhere near Hank Jr again.
That was about 3 years ago... all 3 acts are now bigger than Jr ever was, and they still keep their distance.
Oh and one more thing, McGraw is one of the most underrated guitar players out there. He and Paisley are the Vai/Satriani of the country music world.

(12,008 posts)I suppose I only have anecdotal evidence to back this up, but I think I can count the number of right-wing people involved in music I've met on one hand. Musicians are generally just in it for the music and don't give a damn about race, sexual orientation, etc.

(31,011 posts)After the things he said and campaigning with Palin, we couldn't stomach him. It was easy for me, but my husband loved his music. This was a big deal for him to turn his back on Jr. like that.

(12,008 posts)This is the way I always feel about charity from the wealthy. It's great when people take it upon themselves to give back, but what about the majority who don't? I think that's what should be highlighted. We live in a world where some people can become fabulously wealthy while others live in need. It shouldn't be this way.

(12,008 posts)The problem is that 1. this is so rare - you'd think more people like him would have the same amount of compassion, and 2. That this is needed. It highlights how our economy is unbalanced and clearly in need of regulation.

(19,736 posts)Most of it just doesn't get to the public.
When we had the OKC Bombing, Billy Ray Cyrus wanted to come down and greet rescue workers, but he did it during the evening after the news people went home.
And during 9/11, Steve Buschemi, a former NYC firefighter, helped out at his house while they were off rescuing people. We didn't find out until years later.
The good ones are the ones who do big stuff, but keep it quiet. It's the act itself, not the publicity....
