NYPD officer: I made 'big mistake' when I said I arrested New York Times photographer over camera flash
-------
the 44th Precinct cop faces felony counts of filing false documents for allegedly fibbing about the reasons behind the Aug. 4, 2012 arrest of veteran photographer Robert Stolarik.
The journalist was photographing Ackermann's arrest of a young woman on McClellen Street and Sheridan Ave. when the cop arrested him, too, claiming later in court documents that Stolarik interfered in his arrest by repeatedly using his camera's flash.
Charges against Stolarik were dismissed and Ackermann was indicted after investigators determined the photographer did not use a flash at all.
A camera expert testified at trial that the Stolarik's Nikon D4 was not even capable of producing such an effect.
Assistant District Attorney Pishoy Yacoub said in Wednesday's summations that Ackermann, facing heat from NYPD Internal Affairs, invented the flash story in an effort to justify the controversial collar.

The education requirements need to be raised for cops too many dummies doing stupid things they think they can lie their way through to justify their abusive behavior.
Smarter cops will know better.

(37,665 posts)It is part of their interrogation technique.
Add to that, the rely on "professional courtesy" to think they can get away with any lie. I've had a cop tell me she is a member of the biggest gang in the country, mess with one of us and you mess with all of us. They know they are in big trouble if the tell the truth about a fellow gang member, I mean cop.
The only "professional courtesy" is to never break the law, so as to never put another cop in the position to have to lie or break their oath to up hold the law and the Constitution of the state or the nation.

Cop culture is too ingrained with not ratting out the bad cops.
Revamp the training nationwide with psyche testing to weed out the bullies then hire smarter cops who can think on their feet to de-escalate instead of escalate situations.

(37,665 posts)understands the professional courtesy thing, he has a PHD. He told me he does not tolerate it in his dept. and will fire anyone that uses it. We just need more brass like him.

(37,665 posts)I had been told by one of his deputies that I was a target for a few of his men and women because of a divorce. He handed me his business card and wrote down his home number and said to call him, day or night, if I ever got pulled over in his county and they both would be fired. He then took me to my ex's office and searched it for some things she might have stole from me.

Love this quote from the cop: "I keep going over it and trying to figure out how I could have made that big of a mistake,". Dude. C'mon.
