"If you mean Indian, am I an Indian? No I'm not. I'm not living in Cherokee Nation. So, I'm not an immigrant to a Cherokee Nation. I'm living in America which was created by settlers, not immigrants."

The distinction she seems to be drawing here is between descent from individuals or families who stole land (and probably lives) from the indigenous peoples and homesteaded it, "creating wealth" as the slogan goes, and "putting land to use that was just being wasted" (another rationalization for the great land grab/genocide that lies at the root of the US). Whereas an immigrant (in this "rationale" is someone who came over later, when most of the spoils had already been divided, and made his living working for others in sweatshops and coal mines, a proletarian rather than one of the sturdy yeomanry that these people affect to think are the true backbone of the nation.

(11,843 posts)Yes I was born on this continent, but most of my great grandparents were not. I only met one of me great grandparents (the rest had died before I was born), and she was born in Norway.
I am not a Native American. One could argue that I am native to America, but that means something entirely different than Native American. To imply that you are a Native American, when your ancestors were immigrants in the last half century or so is demeaning to the people whose ancestors have been here since people have been here.
