(5,417 posts)It appears that the baseket had watermelon (and many other flavors) of gum.
If it was an all black band, and they included only watermelon gum, I could see the racism, but it seems like its quite possible they wanted to include some gum, and bought a bunch of different flavors, one of which was watermelon.
Unless there is new info, I don't see the racsim from what was said in the report.

(111,417 posts)I'll be glad when watermelon is no longer considered racist, it's my favorite. Ditto bananas, although I prefer the ruby red fingerings to the big, tasteless Cavendish variety at the supermarket. What likely put it over the top were the coconuts, not terribly appropriate because they can't be eaten out of hand, they need tools and aggression first.
My guess is that it will be allowed to blow over (it's Texas) but from now on, they're going to stick to apples and grapes.

(15,043 posts)Everything was cool in the weekend after the gift was delivered at the game Friday night, but the allegations came Monday. Did an adult get involved Monday morning and decide that the kids should be offended? And even if the receiving teens were upset, was a learning opportunity missed in the wake of someone's determination to seek "justice," whatever that may be?
I think the first thing to understand is, when dealing with high school teenagers, your dealing with high school teenagers, kids who may be ignorant of their actions implications, and more in need of education than punishment. Can't tell from this report, however. Hope it all works out well for everyone involved and doesn't become a cause for resentment or ill-will.
