We used to anchor in the main channel during incoming tides-in a sand bottom area. 10-12 knot currents required wire line & 2lbs weight balls to get to the bottom.

The fish could get very large. We used smaller stickleback sharks whole for bait.

Soupfin is a excellent fighter-comparable to a Mako shark. I had one almost spool me with a 60 lb stand up Tuna rig.

Those were good days. We released most sharks but the soupfin is probably the best tasting fish I've ever had. And yes I kept a few.

I'm not sure they still do it-but there were party boats that specialized in this fishing. The Fury was one I remember.

I don't even catch & release nowadays. right arm tore up & ethically I don't even want to harass the poor fishies nowadays. They have more than enough problems. The drought in the PNW has caused river temps to be fatal to a majority of this years spawning fish.
