Zimbabwe: MDC (Movement for Democratic Change) Commemorates Africa Day

PRESS RELEASE

The MDC joins Zimbabweans and the rest of Africa in commemorating Africa Day. This year's Africa Day is celebrated against a background of civil unrest on the continent. This is contrary to the objectives of Africa's founding fathers who gave all for a better, free, united, democratic and peaceful continent.

In Zimbabwe, the Day comes amid increasing human rights violations and selective application of the law by State organs as the country gears towards the constitutional referendum and the watershed elections. The MDC membership which constitutes the majority, is being persecuted by the police at the instigation of Mugabe's Zanu (PF). Everyday, Zimbabweans are subjected to abitrary arrests leading to continuous detentions, assault and bias at the hands of the judiciary.

The continued meddling in politics by the securocrats has made Zimbabwe a laughing stock on the continent as this goes against the founding principles of the OAU now AU.

The bias shown by the State media where it plays kingmaker is against the principles of democracy and the African charter on humans and people's rights. The MDc therefore calls for immediate overhaul of both the security and media sectors. It is the MDC's conviction that the adherence to the agreed human rights charters will lead to peaceful elections and political stability in this country and beyond. For this cause, the MDC fully supports regional and continental bodies' initiatives to seeing a better Zimbabwe. As we celebrate this Day, the international community must support the cause of Zimbabweans in the spirit of brotherhood that this continent has always cherished since 1963. The people's struggle for real change: Let's finish it!
