http://www.sacbee.com/news/local/crime/article41673117.htmlThree Florin High School students were taken to juvenile hall after a wild fight in which the schools principal was body-slammed.
The chaotic scene played out Monday during lunch time on the South area campus.
A fight broke out, drawing a school resource police officer, a school official and Principal Don Ross. Students gathered around, at least one recording the melee on a cell phone, as officials tried to break up the fight.
After trying to restrain a tall student, Ross was thrown to the floor. Undeterred, Ross got back up and tried to prevent the student from fighting again

(51,308 posts)I guess many will head right into the prison pipeline.
This is sad for our country, but no one seems to care.
All the reality shows, the rap star feuds, the dissing of those you don't like on social media, the calling out...what are we teaching these kids?
LeftyMom
(49,212 posts)What the hell do "rap star feuds" and "dissing" have to do with a suburban high school in the central valley?
Explain it to me, please.

(51,308 posts)Nice try though. It ain't about black or white, though YOUR "coded language" makes it obvious where you're coming from. This crap is affecting kids from all walks of life...color has nothing to do with it, not even socio-economic class so much anymore, though I do think poorer kids are more at risk.
The Real Housewives, the Real World, Jerry effing Springer from back in the day...all this pap on TV that kids get to watch as a daily menu. You don't think that has an effect?
You think that kids in a suburban high school don't keep up with the latest celebrity feuds? What has Miley said about Nicki? What has whatever pop star of the week said about the other pop star of the week? How about that youtube channel "worldstar" or whatever it is called? Glorifying fights. Woohoo! FIGHT FIGHT!
I have a part time job on the side where most of my co-workers are younger than I. I hear this all the time.
You think this is good for kids to see these examples that are set for them?

(49,212 posts)He's those boys' age and this is our neighborhood. So I'm not sure why you're trying to explain the situation to me- if that video weren't so shaky I could probably put names to half the faces in the crowd.
Let me explain a few things to you: The only reason this particular fight is in the news is because racists want to shift the story away from that cop who assaulted a black girl in South Carolina. So they found a video on YouTube of some black teenagers 3,000 miles away making asses of themselves and they made international news out of it.
Teenagers are shortsighted, they're temperamental, and sometimes they get in fights. That's not news. It wasn't news when I was a kid and it wasn't news when you were a kid and oh boy do my parents have some stories about the nonsense that went on at their high schools when dinosaurs roamed the earth.
But somehow this fight, these teenagers, can be attributed to rap and to celebrity feuds (which are as old as celebrity culture, meaning your grandparents read about them in the paper and heard about them on the radio) and to whatever other nonsense you're going on about? Based on absolutely no data? You don't even know if the kids in that video listen to rap (but you assume, which you wouldn't if they were white) or follow celebrity twitter nonsense, and we do know that teenagers were doing stupid and sometimes violent things before rap or twitter existed.

(51,308 posts)I'm not a kid, I'm white, and I listen to rap. I have for years. Why would you think whites don't listen to rap? That is a weird statement in 2015.
I've also spent years in the schools down here, so no Californiasplainin' is necessary. The entire country is dealing with violence in schools. Whites fight whites...everyone fights everyone. Good lord.
Of course this one fight cannot be attributed to any one thing. But you are extremely blindered if you cannot see the change in our society in the last 20 years.
Violence and nastiness seems to be the answer to everything.
Several years ago I worked in an office with several young WHITE girls. Their favorite pastime was watching girl-fights on the internet while on the clock. I was appalled then, and that was my first exposure to what youngsters seem to find amusing these days.
You want to make everything about race, then you totally miss the point. These are CHILDREN who need good role models. Our society sucks and is not giving them that. My opinion. Yours may differ and you're welcome to it.
Go on with your bad self calling me a racist. You know nothing about me
However, I remember you well from days past here on DU. Oh yes, I certainly do. I think that our conversation has ended.
Have a good evening.

(49,212 posts)If you've got a link to where you blamed some white kid's issues on rap you feel real free to post it right here.
But in the mean time I wasn't born yesterday and I know a dogwhistle when I hear one, so don't bother pretending that's not what that was about just because you got caught.

Bam.
Equating violent teenagers with violent law enforcement officers is just sad.
I'm not excusing violent teen behavior (which has been around forever), but we should expect a lot more from those in authority. Forget rap and violent movies and games -- what these kids are seeing from those in positions of authority sets a horribly bad example.

(4,713 posts)Got kicked out of an entire school district & spent over a year in juvi. My last arrest was at 20, then I realized I couldn't do that shit anymore & it was time to grow up. My family was sure I was going to wind up dead or in jail. Not everyone that has it rough as kid's grows up to continue that lifestyle.
I am a minority who loves my rap & hip hop mainly because I can relate wholeheartedly to what they talk about.

(2,841 posts)Ten years ago this type of shit was going down when i was a senior in HS (went to a mostly low-income district ). Gang fights, girl fights, fights with teachers/staff/school officers; you name it its happened. Thing is, that was before the boon of YouTube, social media and that god damn Worldstar website where having a fight video you recorded posted on there equals a gold star accomplishment. Now fast forward and you have hundreds, even thousands of fight videos in classrooms and school hallways. Its crazy what teachers and schools in general have to deal with.
Sad thing is, most of this happens in mostly black schools and/or poor school districts. There's a huge social factor in this that no one (at least here) wants to talk about or even come up with a solution for. Its sad. Were failing our kids, the most vulnerable to crime at that.

(2,841 posts)with being in school and the violence I saw and the officers walking the halls whenever stuff happened. I've been a student in a district situations in a rust-belt city sandwiched between Detroit and Flint and was also a student in a alternative school filled with kids with behavioral problems so I KNOW what I'm talking about and have a right to say so.
But I guess talking about my experience and my opinions on why we see so much of it is "racist shit" because I said something someone didn't like so...

(2,841 posts)I was talking about what I experienced in my own high school which was mostly black and lower-income. It's the same type of stuff you'd hear from someone else in Detroit schools or Flint schools or Saginaw schools, etc. Admittedly it's a broadbrush on my part but ask any other POC who attended a district that was struggling with crime and tattered budgets and they'll say the same thing about the violence in their schools.
I was just being real, if that offends you then you were lucky to be in one of the "nice" schools.
romanic
(2,841 posts)so im going to ask again; what about my post was racist? I'm a biracial darker skinned man that grew up in a low-income district with gang violence and drug trafficking in and around the crummy, broke high school i was forced to go in.
Racist shit? You know what's really racist? School districts that are left to rot and fall apart because of white flight. Districts that have little to no money to do repairs or rebuild because the surrounding (mostly white) towns that fall underneath part of the district WENT TO THE POLLS AND OVERWHELMING voted down millages to improve a failing district. Districts that hired SROs with hefty salaries while the teachers and janitors have thier wages cut and thier supplies dwindle because of cuts made by fat cat administrators. And let's not forget all the few positive things like art and music and shop classes being cut while class sizes double in numbers, some mixed with problem children from a different school in the district because that building was closed...due to more cuts.
I've experienced the appalling conditions of my schools in the mostly black city i lived in, just like kids that live in other mostly black cities here in Michigan (Detroit, Flint, Saginaw, Benton Harbor, Inkster and Buena Vista - the latter two dissolved by our white GOP governor ) Violence, little opportunity, overworked staff, and no one who gives a shit.
If anything is racist it's the conditions that plague mostly black/ poor school districts; not me detailing my experience in a district similar to it. Again if that offends you're delicate sensibilities then too god damned bad. It's my opinion and my life experience and i refuse to be silenced by someone like you.

Things that would not have received wide notice back in the day are now broadcast widely via the internet.

(4,713 posts)Only adminstrators or the SRO are allowed to touch them. I got on a teacher for illegally searching my 13 yr old. Teachers need to know their place. They aren't bouncers & i despised most of my teachers if I was in the middle of a fight you better believe I wasn't going to stop just bc some teacher jumped in, but I would if I saw the adminstrators or SRO.

(1,958 posts)In St. Paul, they have been assaulted and it's "their fault" according to district officials.

(4,713 posts)& the SRO so if they don't do that & get caught up in the middle it is their fault. It comes from being the grown-up in the room & understanding protocol.

(6,324 posts)never should be considered a law enforcement issue.
If you ever want to complain about cops in schools too much or why so many kids end up in trouble, your attitude right here is just why that happens and why schools call in cops for minor shit like texting in class or a clock that they know is just a clock- because some overbearing whining parent will trying and hassle them or get them in trouble if they date act as a responsible adult in the classroom and discipline a student.

(16,095 posts)way back in the 80's there were sometimes fights.
I recall at least one where a teacher got knocked down.
Teenagers are volatile and some have poor impulse control. It is part of being a teenager. It gets better as their brains mature and the hormones settle down.
This is nothing new.
This particular incident is being put out there to make it look as if the "officer" who decided that a girl sitting silently in her seat was an invitation for a violent assault on her.
The kids in this incident should have consequences, but not jail time.
