Period.
Cops don't treat "white women" the same.
I don't care if you have a problem with that statement.
No, really. I don't care.
marym625
(17,997 posts)Don't understand that.
But I'm very happy you donated! I hope everyone that has recd it has.

I'm hoping that the other girl that's been charged also has an attorney.
And I hope that this girl, the one that was thrown around like a rag doll, has a guardian ad litem. Someone that can't gain from her. Someone that will protect her.

I recced this thread, but wasn't able to donate myself. Fact is, I have been struggling with myself about setting up my own account there. I'm having a little hardship right now myself, and it feels like I'm drowning. I'm on disability and usually manage my money very well, but back in June, I finally paid off a truck I was buying and freed up some money. As soon as I got the clear title, I traded it. It was a 1995 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 that got about 12 MPG on a good day! I have a friend who needed a work truck, and had a 1994 Acura Integra that he wanted to trade. The Acura gets over 30 MPG, so I jumped on it! Hadn't had it a week when it got stolen. Luckily it was found 2 days later, in the parking lot of a gas station. The only thing wrong was busted ignition... and the clutch was burned out. Over $500 to fix, which I didn't have so I went online and tried to get a credit card or loan. One company gave me a $650 line of credit. I misread the interest rate, thought it said 25.8%, but was actually 258%! With my upcoming payment, I will have paid back over $500... and my account balance is barely below the $650!
To make matters worse, a week after getting it back from having the clutch and ignition fixed, someone busted the windshield, driver's window and cracked the sun roof. I guess my friend had someone mad at him, and didn't know that he had traded the car. I was finally able to find a side window a few weeks ago, which I needed most because it's getting colder and I couldn't go anywhere if it was raining unless I wanted to get soaked. At least the windshield and sun roof don't leak, but I can't afford to fix them right now. Right now it just seems like every time I see a light at the end of a tunnel, it's another danged train about to crash into me!
Sorry to spill this out on you, but had to get it out of my head and off my chest. I feel a little better now just getting it out there. I've been too worried and stressed the past few months to the point that it affects my sleep. Seems like I wake up every couple of hours. Piddle around on here, then go back to sleep for a couple more hours. I apologize again for dumping this on you, but this is the first time I've told anyone about my current situation and, as stated, I feel a little better now. Guess I'll try to get 2 or 3 more hours of sleep now, then be up for the day.
Peace to you and yours,
Ghost

(17,997 posts)I'm sure if you set up a gofund me and post it on du, you'll get some help. There are very good, generous people in du.
There are pitfalls to gofundme though. Not sure exactly what they are, but I know some people have had problems getting the money. Plus, they keep a percentage of what is raised. But I'm sure you would get enough to get you out from under water.
Again, I'm so sorry you're having problems.

(14,912 posts)I have made it through worse before, but over the past few years it seems like I will be doing great for a while then BAM!!, everything hits me at once. I have always been able to roll with the punches... and somehow come out on top again, but lately it just seems to be harder to do. Maybe my deteriorating health, and the extra stress from that, has something to do with it??
Peace to you and yours, and thank you for the kind words..

(2,638 posts)Which certainly is more than what would be needed to defend against two misdemeanors. This shouldn't be a get rich quick remedy and there is nothing on the gonfundme page that states where the excess funds are going. Does the attorney just pocket the money?
I thought the goal of $25,000 was a bit high and it's way past that now. The generosity of people is so amazing but there are so many causes that need our help. This shouldn't be a reward in any case. Now if funds would be used to get rid of the crazy law in S.C. I could get behind it so that students are no longer criminalized for being teenagers.
marym625
(17,997 posts)I hope there's a guardian ad litem. And, I hope that these funds (in excess) also go toward the defense of the other girl that was arrested.
I'll try to find out more

(7,581 posts)He should be taking a percentage of any award the girl would get from the school and police department in a lawsuit. Crook.

(14,912 posts)wouldn't she be receiving some kind of Survivor's Benefits if the mother ever worked? When I got my disability approved both of my kids were minors. They both got a check each month until they turned 18. A woman that I dated for a while about 10 years ago passed away unexpectedly about 6 years ago, on her son's 16th birthday. We had remained friends and her son and mine were best friends. Her son drew a Survivor's Benefits check from her work, even though she hadn't worked in a few years, until he was 18.
Hopefully the lawyers are trying to maybe get her emancipated to get her out of foster care, and use the money to give her a head start in her new life.
Just some thoughts..

(14,912 posts)It was widely reported, erroneously, that she was an orphan, hence my questions. Her mother *and* grandmother are still alive, but she IS in foster care for some reason.

Hence my post above wondering if she gets State funded medical care as a ward of the State, and whether she gets any Survivor's Benefits from Social Security from her mother.

(14,912 posts)This is why I have mentioned you a couple of times in my list of Top 10 posters here. Real assets to DU, Which include (in no particular order) H2O Man, sea fan, Octafish, kpete and a few others... I just woke up, and am still shaking the cobwebs out and don't mean to leave anyone out.
I also don't mean that anyone else is less important, nor am I trying to denigrate anyone else. Everyone here is an asset since they represent, and vote for, the Democratic Party... but we all have our favorites that we look forward to reading...

(6,930 posts)Something about this whole case bothers me deeply. The cop was the first criminal to hurt this child, but I just think she has no one with her best interests at heart and now this lawyer will be the next. I wonder if she even has someone just to put their arms around her and comfort her.
Everyone needs that, and I cannot imagine the confusion, the fear, the utter bewilderment she must be feeling. Yeah, money is great, but it will not fix psychic pain.

Yea, he's looking at a nice pay day there. The city has already as much as admitted fault in any lawsuit when they fired the cop. It should be a nice settlement for the child, and the lawyer.

(7,290 posts)her medical expenses should already be covered, she's in a public school, so what educational expenses does she need, etc.
Obviously, people should donate if they feel moved to do so, but it smells of a lawyer making a quick buck to me.

(17,997 posts)She's in the system. He's the South Carolina House Minority Leader. Any shenanigans would hurt him to a much greater extent than this amount of money would help him.
I understand the skepticism. I just think this is much too public to be anything but legitimate

(17,997 posts)But I also know that the Republicans in South Carolina will do whatever they can to bring him down.
Because she is in the system, she also has a case worker and a guardian ad litem. This is too public, imho, to be used for anything but to help her.

(39,215 posts)support programs such as Medicaid require you to use your own resources before they cover you. They are also closely watching this.

(17,997 posts)I have another post about this and have the attorney's address to send encouragement to this girl. It surely would at least be uplifting. And it's a way to help without sending money.
Thank you, jwirr. Always a pleasure!

(39,215 posts)already being paid by the state. I would love to help her but I am not sure that her attorney understands what a state does to any money for those who are being helped in any way by the state. My understanding is that since her mother died she is an orphan.
Unless this is for attorney fees then it will go to him.
God knows the girl needs help but I just think this is not the way unless it somehow is enough to get her out of the system entirely.
Helping the poor with money when they are on various programs does nothing but pay the taxpayer their money back.

Also, she's not an orphan. Turns out the New York Daily News misquoted Rutherford.
