(4,119 posts)That's 3 GOP wins in a row. Maybe they mean 3 different presidents.

(14,177 posts)Especially if they start history with 1980. The history of this continent goes back a few thousand years as far as being populated.

(33,688 posts)beg to differ. FDR won in '32, '36, '40 and'44. Harry won in '48.

(111,255 posts)Of course that's been the case quite a few times in our history.

(30,058 posts)George H W Bush was elected in 1988, that would be three times, I am surprised history wasn't researched. FDR was elected in 1932, 1936, 1940 and 1944, Truman served from FDR's fourth term and was elected in 1948, that would be a total of five straight terms.

(1,958 posts)but FDR and Truman made it five times in a row. Reagan - Bush was three times in a row. That's off the top of my head.
I looked it up and there was a 28 year stretch of Democratic-Republican presidents from 1801 - 1829, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, Adams).
Then there were Jackson (first Democrat) and Van Buren from 1829 - 1841.From 1869 to 1885 they were all Republican, Grant, Hayes, Garfield, Arthur.Well, you get the idea. There were three consecutive Republicans at least twice more before FDR.

(12,652 posts)Before that, we had....
Jefferson, Jefferson, Madison, Madison, Monroe, Monroe, JQ Adams - Democratic Republican
Jackson, Jackson, Van Burien - Democratic
Grant, Hayes, Garfield/Arthur -Republican
Mac-Kinley/Roosevelt (TR), Roosevelt(TR), Taft - Republican
Harding, Coolidge, Hoover - Republican
FDR, FDR, FDR, FDR/Truman, Truman - Democratic
and of course, Reagan, Reagan, GHW Bush - Republican
So, out of the 57 times there's been a president, there have been:
One time we had 7 consecutive presidents of one party.
One time we had 5 consecutive presidents of one party (two serving the same term - technically could be considered 4 terms).
Twice we had 4 consecutive presidents of one party (with two pairs serving the same term, so technically that could be considered three terms)
And three times - twice that are technically within living memory - we have had three elected presidents of the same party serving consecutive terms.
So NPR is spouting a party line of BS. I suspect this is to appease corporate sponsors.

(16,254 posts)And we are all in deep doo-doo.
I don't know about the rest of you, but I can't tolerate 4-8 more years of Republicans trying to run this country, or what's left of it after Ryan takes the reins.

(5,325 posts)As if "1980 something" was the beginning of history. And what does that have to do with the Senate?
