Pope Warns Against Bling

"Today Christmas has become a commercial celebration, whose bright lights hide the mystery of God's humility, which in turn calls us to humility and simplicity," he said in his homily to about 10,000 people in the basilica and millions more watching on television throughout the world.

When the Vatican auctions its vast stores of stolen booty and uses the proceeds to feed and clothe the world's desperately poor, then they can lecture me on bling.

To tell the truth, I'm not fond of bling. I am wearing a couple of silver and azurite/malachite rings. They're cheap and I love the colors in the stones.

But it's a little hard to support the message when it's given among all the trappings of opulence that the Church somehow sees as "honoring" Christ.

Benedict... it all starts with you. Lose the gold, lose the fancy duds, and live life the way Christ did -- simply.

Then maybe I'll listen.

But that aside, the Pope article looks like it could have been from The Onion.

19. Saying one thing, then doing another is the definition of "hypocrisy". No special pass for Al.
