be because some of the players are subconsciously not playing as well because of joe ricketts causing controversy with his anti-Obama
Reverend Wright drivel?
Just a thought. 10 games is a long losing streak in baseball.

(31,706 posts)The Ricketts bought a team that was a mess...lots of big money contracts for over-the-hill players and a crumbling ballpark. The Ricketts have spent the last two years trying to dump the big payroll and try to built from scratch. What you have is a minor league team with an ownership that was learning on the job and now have hired a big money GM who will need years to rebuild not just the major league club but the farm system as well.
The Ricketts controversy hurts as the team is hoping city of Chicago and state of Illinois will come up with the 150 million or more to rebuild that deteriorating ballpark. By pissing off Rahm, Quinn and other Illinois Democrats Ricketts will be lucky to get voice mail yet their calls answered.
The big thing to watch is the attendence. Will Cubbie fans put up with an owner who will spend 10 million to slime the President rather than go out and buy a player or two to help the club. Will they continue to flock to the "friendly confines" like lemmings; spending upwards of $400 a ticket to see a losing team?? Losing 10 in a row only underscores how awful this team is...

(32,075 posts)They are a mess, to grossly understate things. I'd somewhat liken the Ricketts purchase of the Cubs to President Obama's inheriting a country that run by Dumbya and the GOP for 8 years. That's how screwed up things are. Most folks knew they were going to be bad this year. I wasn't however, expecting them to be THIS bad. Although, to be fair, they do have a ton of players on the injury list, including THREE catchers! They do have a few good youngsters, and hopefully, they won't be ruined by management stupidity, they way other young talent has been in the past. See: Mark Pryor, Kerry Wood. But, yeah, they suck.
No telling what the fans will do. A lot of them are your suburban republican types, who probably think the Ricketts are heroes, save for Laura. So, some will not desert them over the political shit. One of the problems with the Cubs has long been the fact that they have become trendy, thanks to their losing ways, and various pop culture things, like "the Bleacher Bums". So, there will still be the crowd that thinks it's "hip" to sit out in the bleachers, get shit-faced drunk and heckle everyone, even though they don't know shit about baseball. I really don't think they will be setting any attendance records if this keeps up, however. I have noticed lots of empty seats as of late.

(31,706 posts)I'm a fan of the other Chicago team...which is playing better but has its own problems. I'd never seen empty seats at a Cubs/Sox series until last weekend, but then a look at the ticket prices and I can understand. Both team jacked up prices to these games (Cards series are also at that special upper tier pricing) meaning it would cost a family of 4 a minimum of $200 for tickets, parking and maybe a frosty malt.
As a Sox fan it comes naturally to cut down the Cubbies thus I appreciate your openess and honesty. Since my team's won a World Series I'd like to see the same happen on the North Side in my lifetime...it'd be great for the city. However it's gonna take a while for it to happen and any distraction by ownership isn't a good thing. Someone I read compared Tom Ricketts to Michael McCaskey...they both have a creepy look. Maybe moving Laura up front could help cool things down...it sure couldn't hurt.
I've always joked that Cub fans go to the ballpark while Sox fans go to the ballgame but if the team continues to disappoint maybe Cub fans will finally learn what Sox fans did in the 90s...vote your confidence in the team with your pocketbook.
Cheers!

(2,520 posts)You are correct that baseball at that level is 90% head, 10% talent (all the players have major league talent). Ricketts' attitude is affecting the Cubs and their opponent for the day, giving the opponent just a little more reason to stay sharp and the Cubs just a little less.
