(CNN)Initially hailed as a hero after his death, Fox Lake, Illinois, police Lt. Joe Gliniewicz is now likely to be remembered by another label: a betrayer.
What once appeared to be the killing of an officer in the line of duty turned out to be "a carefully staged suicide," George Filenko, Lake County Major Crimes Task Force commander, said Wednesday.
"This staged suicide was the end result of extensive criminal acts that Gliniewicz had been committing," Filenko said, announcing the conclusions of the investigation into the officer's September 1 death.
The officer had been stealing and laundering money from a police department program that mentored young people hoping to become law enforcement officers, Filenko said. Gliniewicz, a leader in that program, had been stealing money for at least seven years, he said.
The investigation found that the officer, who had experience creating mock crime scenes, staged his suicide to make it look like a homicide.

(10,283 posts)Things just didn't sound right in the news reporting. You could tell that there where oddities to the reporters and even investigators, but of course they had to be careful about making any kind of overt accusation or even being plainspoken in their skepticism.

(44,397 posts)e authorities are now under fire and facing questions as to why the investigation, that cost more than $300,000 of taxpayers' money, lasted for so long - even though Gliniewicz was the center of a criminal investigation at the time of his death.
George Filenko, commander of the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force, confirmed Gliniewicz had been stealing and laundering money from the Explorers on Wednesday to use for a number of personal items, as well as gym memberships and to facilitate his loans.
Investigators found he had also forged signatures on official documents.
There are no winners here. Gliniewicz committed the ultimate betrayal to the citizens he served and the entire law enforcement community
George Filenko, commander of the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force
Filenko started the press conference saying he was 'wrapping up' the case, stating Gliniewicz's death was a 'carefully staged suicide'.
He added that his colleagues found he had deleted incriminating text messages just before his suicide.
One of them said: 'If she gets ahold of the old checking account, im pretty well f*****,' according to ABC7 Chicago.
He went on to say: 'Hopefully she decides to get a couple of drinks in her and gets a dui [sic].'

(12,723 posts)Also under state law they can not take away the pension the widow will get because you can not prosecute the dead.
They even have texts between him and his son and wife talking about killing the auditor to cover his crime.

Thanks for the info, CBGLuthier!
