Reclaiming America? - LTTE

What a great letter in my local newspaper!

Reclaiming America?

Why is it that I don’t ask my friend Helen what she means when she says, “I want my country back?” We’re the same age, 84.

Does she mean she wants the time back when our high school classmate David was made fun of by the other guys because he was “different”? David committed suicide at age 17.

Or our friend Angie, who is black? Back then Angie couldn’t try on a dress at a department store downtown — and she certainly couldn’t use the restroom.

Or maybe our friend Harold, who is Jewish? He sat in his fifth-grade classroom wistfully looking out the window as all his buddies trudged across Wornall Road to practice the Christmas program?

Or is she remembering our buddy Carol, who had to either go to her Aunt Martha’s in Webb City, Mo., to have the baby and give it up or go to that place on 43rd Street, have the baby and give it up?

So, why don’t I ask my friend Helen what she means when she says, “I want my country back?” Do I not ask her because I don’t want to hear her answer?

2. When I was 8 years old, we noticed a neighbor woman had been absent from church for several Sundays

We didn't know her very well, just well enough to wave as we drove by and saw her in her yard with her family, and we smiled at them at church. We were in the car coming home from church one Sunday and my mom and dad were whispering in the front seat. When we got home, I noticed my mom had a tear in her eye. I heard my dad whisper something about an abortion.

So I asked my grandmother what had happened, why was my mom sad and what did abortion mean. And my grandmother, who never once lied to me, told me about abortion. Our neighbor had died from an abortion. She had 3 little kids, probably all under 5 years old. Really cute little boys. And their mom was dead.

When I hear about the good ole days, I remember this woman. No way do I want to go back.
