State investigators conceded on Thursday that local police officers had fired the shots that killed a small boy in Marksville, Louisiana, and disavowed an earlier explanation for why the officers deployed their guns.
The boy, Jeremy Mardis, died on Tuesday night after police shot into a car driven by his father, Chris Few. On Thursday, Colonel Michael Edmonson, head of the Louisiana state police, denied earlier reports that Few had been reversing his car toward the officers, who then had to defend themselves. No. I didnt say that, he told the Guardian. That didnt come from me.
At a press conference, Edmonson initially described the shooting as an exchange of gunfire, but later clarified that only the officers had shot, and that investigators had found no gun in Fews car. Officials had previously declined to confirm whether officer gunfire was responsible for Mardiss death.

Edmonson also said video footage of the incident does exist, but that investigators have not reviewed it. He added that the officers involved there are four had so far refused to speak with state police investigators. Police have not released the names of the involved officers.

(19,569 posts)I dont know why he felt the need to start patrolling in city limits, Lemoine said Thursday of Voinche. It makes no sense to me.

(6,409 posts)These sheriffs and police chiefs sometimes have big egos, and they let their egos make decisions for them. My parents lived in Albuquerque in the 1970s, and they had some battle going on between the sheriff and the city police. It got to the point where sheriff deputies were required to stop before they entered the city and install cloth covers over their red & blue lights. I don't remember all the details, but it was ridiculous.

"Moments later, she said, as the cars pulled away from the light, she saw two marshals cars marked in black and white approaching from behind with their lights flashing. She looked into Fews car as he pulled away, and he was pointing at his sons head, indicating that he was in the car and he wasnt sure what to do.
Few was afraid of the marshals, she said, because he and and one of the marshals on the scene had a prior personal conflict."
That poor, poor little boy.

Thanks for mentioning it.

(34,825 posts)and that's why previous reports of backing into the patrol car, and an "exchange" of gunfire are being walked back.

(26,663 posts)if ever. Look how long the Trayvon Martin case was kept quiet. I think law enforcement has had cover for a long time and that's coming to an end. Justice delayed is justice denied. I've been reading the Gauardian daily and checking the website "The Counted" at least once a week. Americans must wake up to the violence perpetuated by police forces and demand change.

(10,953 posts)warrant and the cops lied their butts off. His "crime" was being involved in some incident with one of the cops in the past (personal not police related). It sounded like he was concerned about what the cop would do to him since a badge and gun seem to give some cops the impression that they can use said gun and badge in dealing with personal grudges. I think the incident was personal and the other three cops joined in with the idiot cop and they screwed up big time and a young child lost his life. All 4 cops should face criminal charges. I see a civil suit in their (and the marshall's office) future with a large payout to the family.

Are you serious?

(10,953 posts)they have not been able to find an outstanding warrant on the guy.
Pretty much all that the cops said initially has been disproven. I imagine why they have all lawyered up and are not cooperating with the investigation.
