(13,582 posts)a terrorist attack on Obama's watch. It wasn't exactly cool to say it was only four guys vs almost 3000 on 9/11. Then they were all ready to come back with saying, "oh, like four dead Americans don't count?"
They were burning to be able to hang something like a 9/11 attack on Obama. I'd say they would have given up another 3000 of us to have done so.

(55,745 posts)CBS News
WASHINGTON, July 26, 2001
Fishing rod in hand, Attorney General John Ashcroft left on a weekend trip to Missouri Thursday afternoon aboard a chartered government jet, reports CBS News Correspondent Jim Stewart.
In response to inquiries from CBS News over why Ashcroft was traveling exclusively by leased jet aircraft instead of commercial airlines, the Justice Department cited what it called a "threat assessment" by the FBI, and said Ashcroft has been advised to travel only by private jet for the remainder of his term.
"There was a threat assessment and there are guidelines. He is acting under the guidelines," an FBI spokesman said. Neither the FBI nor the Justice Department, however, would identify what the threat was, when it was detected or who made it.
A senior official at the CIA said he was unaware of specific threats against any Cabinet member, and Ashcroft himself, in a speech in California, seemed unsure of the nature of the threat.
"I don't do threat assessments myself and I rely on those whose responsibility it is in the law enforcement community, particularly the FBI. And I try to stay within the guidelines that they've suggested I should stay within for those purposes," Ashcroft said.
Asked if he knew anything about the threat or who might have made it, the attorney general replied, "Frankly, I don't. That's the answer."

John Ashcroft was safe in July 2001. The rest of America, not so much.

(55,745 posts)So Bush avoided the hotel - even though it was protected by NATO SAM batteries - and slept aboard a US missile destroyer in the harbor.
Here's the story from July 2001:
Why would Osama bin Laden want to kill Dubya, his former business partner?
By James Hatfield
Editor's note: In light of last week's horrific events and the Bush administration's reaction to them, we are reprising the following from the last column Jim Hatfield wrote for Online Journal prior to his tragic death on July 18:
July 3, 2001There may be fireworks in Genoa, Italy, this month, too.
A plot by Saudi master terrorist, Osama bin Laden, to assassinate Dubya during the July 20 economic summit of world leaders, was uncovered after dozens of suspected Islamic militants linked to bin Laden's international terror network were arrested in Frankfurt, Germany, and Milan, Italy, in April.
German intelligence services have stated that bin Laden is covertly financing neo-Nazi skinhead groups throughout Europe to launch another terrorist attack at a high-profile American targethis first since the bombing of the USS Cole in Yemen last October.
According to counter-terrorism experts quoted in Germany's largest newspaper, the attack on Dubya might be a James Bond-like aerial strike in the form of remote-controlled airplanes packed with plastic explosives.
Why would Osama bi Laden want to kill, Dubya, his former business partner?

James Hatfield died a few days after this was published. A "suicide."
Thanks for sharing.
Proud Liberal Dem
(24,412 posts)All of the things you mentioned. What I never got was how Republicans were so particularly eager to exploit 9/11 as though it were some "achievement" and profit off of it politically yet totally gloss over the fact that 3000 people died as a result of, at the very least, Bush's lack of concern over the impending attack. And the same people didn't care that, despite the absence of WMD in Iraq, 4000 soldiers died needlessly there as well. If all that wasn't enough, a major US city drowned and his (mis-)Administration's incompetence doomed even more people. He kept us safe?
libodem
(19,288 posts)But if 4 people die in Bengazi it takes how many hearings and and a refusal to stop looking back and finding someone to blame.
With the first 9/11 we were not allowed to ask 'why' or point the finger at who did not keep us safe, or we were considered unpatriotic.
Plus remember how fast Cheney opened the national coffers to hand out a million dollars to each family to stay quiet and not sue the government. Money was no object for them.
Proud Liberal Dem
(24,412 posts)and zeal to "investigate" it compared with their response 9/11/01 is so dramatic/OTT that it's absurd. Benghazi was a tragedy and should have been looked to as in any situation of the sort (no more than one investigation should have been necessary though, esp. when none of the embassy attacks following 9/11/01 AFAIK even got one) but 2996 more people died on 9/11/01 and many Republicans and the Bush (mis-)administration resisted calls for an investigation until it was politically unpalatable to do so and used the events to ram through their political agenda and silence their critics.

(24,412 posts)Pretty much sums it up. I'm glad that Republicans are finally being honest that BENGHAZI! was hyper-inflated to defeat Clinton in 2016 (though I'm sure that they were hopeful that maybe they might have been able to defeat Obama in 2012 with it as well. I still remember that creepy look on Romney's face right after it all happened).
libodem
(19,288 posts)At the time I felt it was a CIA inspired plot to get Romney in as president. Just cuz. There were a shit ton of them hanging out there, we now find. And the abuse of that story to make political hay, in no way discourages my twisted conspiracy thinking. Yes, I know better.
How come Republican politicians can spend millions of tax payer dollars chasing sand down a rat hole and no one will call them out on it?
I'd like a real hearing on the real cause of the first 9/11, starting with the House of Saud and how much the Bush admin knew in advance.
