I have been excluded from the African-American and Barack Obama groups.

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by TexasTowelie (a host of the General Discussion forum).

I notice that when I start to read an OP that is in one of those groups, I stop reading it and move on to something else.

Does anyone else find themselves skipping posts in groups from which they have been barred. I just noticed this about myself and found it kind of interesting. Thought I would ask whether anyone else finds themselves skipping posts in groups in which they are not allowed to post.

And anyone still here for "discussion" might find that isn't what they signed up for...

Certain people here are too far Right to be posting on Democratic Underground (notice the name) in the first place, yet they are here.

on the Latest or Greatest page. It's like Ignore: I don't have any groups trashed, but I have realized that a few posters have never posted anything or spawned any sub-threads that I found worth reading. A click of the ignore button, and the static goes away...

That's the kind of "criticism" that the "safe" groups have been formed to "protect" people. Imagine if they actually came up against a truly dissenting opinion. I'm sure they'd completely decompose.

They are not places that practice free speech. GD is about as close as it gets to that. Groups are for people that don't want to fight over the group topic. So if you want a discussion that might end in a disgreement about the group topic, just move on to something more interesting.

That's not necessarily a bad thing but people should know that going in, not all hosts welcome dissenting opinions.

I have several of them trashed but am not barred from any.

15. Some give you ample warning before banning, others boot you just for showing up.

My favourite group is completely transparent, they have only banned a few disruptors and the hosts post the announcement and reasons so that there's no crying about it after the fact. Of course that doesn't stop some from trying.

As BMUS says, most of these groups are echo chambers and do not encourage actual discussion.

The two groups that I was banned from are because I didn't follow the accepted script and the denizens thought that I was arguing with them. The truth is that they didn't like the way I was agreeing with them.

Longwinded treatises are not appreciated, and definitely do not work when just one word or phrase in there pisses someone off.

I haven't trashed those two groups because I am mildly curious what they are up to, but I have to admit I rarely read them too deeply. Quite simply, since they insist on following a script, they eventually get redundant and boring.

A lot of groups that I'm not banned from work the same way, of course.

Discuss politics, issues, and current events. Posts about Israel/Palestine, religion, guns, showbiz, or sports are restricted in this forum. Posts about the Democratic primaries, conspiracy theories and disruptive meta-discussion are forbidden. For more information, click here.

Threads complaining about Democratic Underground or its members; threads complaining about jury decisions, locked threads, suspensions, bannings, or the like; and threads intended to disrupt or negatively influence the normal workings of Democratic Underground and its community moderating system are not permitted.
