(8,879 posts)young to remember the chance they took to stand up against the fascist Bush admin and his toxic nation. I think if you knew you would be less dismissive.

(70,501 posts)From Wiki:
On March 10, 2003, during a London concert, nine days before the March 19, 2003 invasion of Iraq, lead vocalist Maines told the audience: "We don't want this war, this violence, and we're ashamed that the President of the United States (George W. Bush) is from Texas".
And it turns out she was spot on.

(9,748 posts)The Dixie Chicks got their first Nashville deal when Country Disco, aka Line Dancing, was the fad and Country music had become Rock & Roll with a cowboy hat and a twang. They showed up at the studio with their steel guitar and were told, "no steel guitars". They pointed out that (1) that ain't in the contract, and (2) this is what we were doing that got you to sign with us in the first place. On top of that, the Chicks refused to wear cowboy hats and rhinestones and went with funky hair colors and the link instead.
The Industry wanted everyone to sing Rock and dress Country. The Chicks were dressing Rock and singing Country.
Then they went and became the second biggest selling Country group in Nashville history making the Industry executives look like the dumbasses they were/are. So when the Dixie Chicks came out with the song Goodbye, Earl, the Industry banned them from Country stations all over the nation. They claimed a song about killing an abusive ex-husband with poisoned black-eyed peas betrayed Country values.
Demonstrating just how completely unfamiliar the executives are with Country music since most of us know that that is practically the definition of Country music.

(17,111 posts)They didn't like that song but it wasn't until the dissed Bush that the boycott took over.Clear Channel owned a lot of ountry stations and the put it in place.

(9,748 posts)It was only a temporary ban as Country fans did not buy the Industry's bullshit about that song.

(19,348 posts)They sued Sony for their royalties, they were told by most in the industry (including the vile Reba) to be greatful for what they have.
Many artists sue their labels for their hard earned money. The difference is that Country is the south, the south is Calvinistic. Calvinists believe you should be greatful for whatever you have and do not question the powerful (since God has blessed them) .
Don't forget, many in Nashville were pissed that the Chicks rose so quickly (that is called the FREE MARKET, something to which these conservatives strongly believe in). The girls needed to "earn their keep" (which they did for the decade before, but that was not enough). At the same time, these charlatans openly embraced Carrie Underwood, who won a lottery (American Idol), she did little to "earn her keep".
To this day, I have a seething contempt for those fascist bastards.

(2,419 posts)I noticed that.
I liked it when country had a different sound than big-arena rock shows.
"Country disco" indeed!
