(21,120 posts)...why going to a cemetery is any more useful than going to a beach, casino, or mall.

(1,033 posts)It kind of disgusts me, to be honest.

(53,410 posts)The truly disgusting thing is how easily our government sends our youth to meaningless wars and then turns around and acts all weepy for the dead on one day a year. Tomorrow? It'll be war business as usual.

(2,479 posts)Get to the store to buy ribs and barbecue sauce, and the location where you're going to cook 'em.
Seriously folks, what are you supposed to do. Sit solemnly all day with your hands folded?
Besides, Soldiers fight for our government. Our government is run by corporations, and the very rich. So corporations send our soldiers to fight for them, not for actual Americans? What are these wars for? They are for corporate acquisition, of oil and minerals, pipeline routes, a position next to Iran to perhaps in the future send more soldiers we're going to whine about today, to make sure they funnel up their oil. They are about spending huge lucre on making military equipment and machines, so they'll make money. They are about spending money there, so we don't have to actually do what we need here, to distract from the attention of here.
So next time you see a soldier you might say "thank you for your service to the corporation." They might not know it (I think most of them do realize it eventually, who they are fighting for), but our government may be by the people, and of the people, but it is no longer "for the people." They're fighting for BP, or big Pharm, or Halliburton, or McDonnel Dougless, or Boeing, or any number of other companies.
Soldiers, do you want to help America? Don't join--don't go back, drain the swamp of American Imperialism and Jingoism.

(3,795 posts)... the solution offered in your last sentence is not so easy for many American men and women.
I strongly believe the corporations have simply chosen this country to be their imperial arm. The multi national corporations do not care one whit about the well being of our country or its citizens on any level. The fact that so many of our good paying jobs with great benefits have disappeared over the past few decades is a feature not a bug of the current system that works in the multi national corporations' interests.
For many men and women in this country, choosing to NOT serve in the military means not being able to provide well financially for their families. In addition, many would fail to receive adequate (any?) health care coverage for themselves and their families. Surely this has been done purposefully.
The politicians and corporations simply spread their propaganda over the masses with their talk of spreading "freedom" and "democracy". In addition, so very much of the reality of the situation is obscured by our corporate media while the propaganda continues to be "catapulted". I do understand why so many Americans can't face this reality even when they have a hunch that it might be true. It is horrifying, and it demands action on our part.
Clearly I believe that choosing to not serve in the military and accepting relative poverty is the correct and moral approach if anyone believes as we do regarding the current state of our military and whose interests are currently being served by our military. But again, that is a very difficult decision for many to make when they have a spouse and children at home and they want to provide a relatively stable and decent way of life for them.

(12,233 posts)just for veterans of the family... Maybe we were doing it wrong, but Memorial Day was for remembering all of the people in our lives that had passed... Oh and then stopping at the Kreme (which is now a 7/11 blah) for our ritual ice-cream. Every year we did this... I would still be doing it with the family if I was in VT..
