People are paid $100 to put "Stand With Scott Walker" signs in their yards (Wisconsin)

"A woman I spoke with in Oconomowoc told me she knows a couple that lives in a beautiful house on the corner of a well-traveled street. This couple has never been particularly interested in politics, and the woman I spoke with said she didn’t even know if they were regular voters.

Well, one day this woman drove by their house and, to her great surprise, saw an enormous “stand with Walker” sign in their yard. Later in the day she ran into the homeowner and commented on the sign by saying she was surprised to see they were supporting Scott Walker.

The homeowner replied, “we don’t support Scott Walker.” The homeowner said that somebody came to their door and asked to “rent” a spot in their yard for the sign and gave them $100.

After hearing this I’m guessing that many of the big Walker and Fitzgerald signs we see are not really grassroots support, but simply a paid-for billboard."

Paid ads are only permitted in certain spots, have to be specific materials, have to be installed in a way that doesn't effect the roadway or block the sidewalk, etc.

I have never believed the polls or the reports of large signs. I noticed that when Walker was leading in the polls they could not stop saying it enough on every t.v. station. Now, not a peep. Oh, they come on the shows and toss out words to let you know they still THINK he's going to win this handily, but there's no bravado, no Scott Walker grinning from ear to ear behind them on the screen. They are trying to convince the democrats they are losing to discourage them from voting because their cause has already lost. Don't believe the hype.

Okay, not entirely "exactly". I'd take their money, and as soon as they were out of sight I'd alter the sign in a way they wouldn't like. Then I'd take a picture of the sign and snail-mail it to them, with a note thanking them for the money that has already been donated to the Democrats.

Do NOT mess with old ladies.

The signs don't say "Vote for Walker", but rather, "I Stand with Walker" or "We Stand with Walker". That is a disturbing part of the $100 to put up a sign story. The people who are taking the payments, are also selling their support by displaying signs that say "I" or "We". I think that is much different from a television, radio, or print ad.

we demonstrators were accused in the press of being rent-a-mob people. Somebody was handing out $10 notes so that we would demonstrate. Unfortunately, I never caught up with this person - and neither did anyone else I knew. Some of us could have really done with $10.
