My memorial day message: one for civilians, one for soldiers.

The way our system is supposed to work is this: civilians decide to go to war. Soldiers fight the war.

For civilians: Stop these stupid imperialistic wars-of-choice. For the last three decades, that's all we've had, especially wars over resources. Insist on Congressional approval for war. Vote. Hold politicians accountable. (Also: If you're the spouse or mate of a soldier, don't send them a Dear John letter.)

For soldiers: Watch out for each other. Especially if you're in command, use your best judgment to avoid unnecessary loss.

Recalling my WWII hero father, an officer, who to the end of his days felt deeply the loss of men under his command and was proud that he had done everything he could to get them back alive.
