(26,295 posts)This made me laugh because when my Mom, who was pretty much a self-taught hobby seamstress, would take on trickier sewing projects, like making a suit, she used to make 'mock ups' out of muslin, learn from her mistakes and then make the final product.

(17,505 posts).... In Europe, "Muslin" is a very fine sheer cotton usually used for christening gowns and wedding dresses.
If it's those guys.... look out. We'll be sent to embroider all day in "white-work work camps"!
(what we call "muslin", they call "calico". What we call "calico".... or muslin (our def.) with flowers printed on it... they call... "cotton with flowers printed on it." "Cotton" over there may also mean "thread".
and " 'mock ups' out of muslin," are called a "toile"

(46,179 posts)I'll decide if they're radical myself.
I admit that I avoid them whenever possible, but if they are radical enough I might welcome the invasion.

(1,587 posts)It's a perfectly respectable fabric. Oh, sure, some of it's really cheap, it's scratchy and will fall apart on you, but most of it is very nice quality, sews and washes well. You can even dye it pretty colors.
There's a fine version that is often covered with printed flower sprigs that makes up a pretty flouncy at-home gown, or a nice summer dress.
We really need to stop this crusade against certain kinds of fabric. Next thing, they'll be coming after the satin lovers, or the crushed velvet. It's a sad world.
