(2,620 posts)I don't think that Aquinas promotes suffering merely for the sake of suffering, but rather that it is ones' honor to suffer when persecuted for "doing the right thing". Obviously there is debate about what that "right thing" is - and it will be different from one person to the next.
But, consider any protester who has willingly suffered physical abuse at the hands of an oppressive govt. Are they wrong to bear their scars as badges of honor - to revel even in their suffering for the cause?

And read what Aquinas said about his mothers plight.

Kick in to the DU tip jar?
This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.
As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
