(20,885 posts)An 'engineering student' (I was one, graduated from Brooklyn Tech) would not present a project if it didn't have a purpose. His clock should do something beside displaying the time. Putting something in a different container provides no insight into how it works. And none of his subsequent verbal encounters shows scientific interest.
Is it possible the kid was baiting and trolling?

(5,018 posts)Is posted all the time on here. Some of it from our own bigoted leaders of the Democratic Party. Some of it praising bigots for doing something else that is progressive. Mocking religions isn't bigotry. In fact, a lot of the religions are bigoted.
If Pope praising threads are allowed, then I don't see why others wouldn't be.
From my understanding of the OP, the guy does quite a few videos tongue in cheek to some degree. He's not entirely sincere. It's a form of humor and a way of mocking certain ideas. Hyperbole is his schtick from what I can tell.
I don't think many on DU will understand that type of humor, and I don't expect them to. I don't think the fat woman video would go over well here, just like I don't think the Pope's comments on gay adoptions would go over well here.
I do think his duck dynasty video would be appreciated by some here, though again, only if you like that kind of humor and social commentary.
As for this video, it probably won't go over well here, because it will be seen as attacking the victim.

Then he actually argues the kid should know he's a Muslim post 911 and therefore should be more careful about what he does! He ought to know his place!

(1,638 posts)I got suspended from school for three days from this stupid same district, from this girl saying I wanted to blow up the school, something I had nothing to do with.
So the video displays this headline from Liberty News:

Oh, and what else is on Liberty News? You can find stories like "The America-Basher in Chief Rolls On."
This is like Global Warning denier stuff; they through a bunch of BS at you, and then tell you that they're right unless you dig through all their BS and refute each line. Of course, if you do that they have a whole new pile of BS they tell you you need to wade through...
It's clear that some people on the internet really hate this 14-year old kid and are really interested in trashing him (see all of the people mocking him for talking about soldering CPUs). (3,212 posts)In fact, I live in a county with a high number of Muslim families (the majority are professionals), and I don't know any of any teens who have gotten suspended for threats or hoaxes. How is it that this kid and his sister have both been suspended and are considered troublemakers?

(7,947 posts)he supports his argument with things the kid did before, things his sister did and things his father did. Right wing type of bullshit.
How can you say it's right wing type bullshit? Just because right wingers have done something like that before? Is that how you're going to support your argument?
Then he actually argues the kid should know he's a Muslim post 911 and therefore should be more careful about what he does! He ought to know his place!
Then he says we are bigoted against the teachers as being from Texas! Oblivious of the fact he said this kid is more likely to get into trouble because he's a Muslim, should know that and be careful what he does.
We still wouldn't know this kid's name if he hadn't gone out of his way to bring something to school that nobody told him to bring to school. There was no project. No teacher said make this and bring it in. There was no science fair. The first teacher he showed it to, his science teacher, shop teacher, whatever, said don't show this to anyone else. It's not being careful about what he does in general because he's a Muslim. It's don't do this specific thing, which would apply to any kid. If you're going to bring it to school for no official reason, don't let it make a sound during class when nobody is expecting it.
treestar
(82,383 posts)though he claimed other kids would be treated the same, he started "this kid's whole life took place after 911" and that "being a Muslim" he should know he would be in trouble for this kind of prank, should have known people would think it was a bomb because he is a Muslim.
And judging people by others is very right wing - because his father did something, it's supposed to reflect on him. Like Obama is supposed to be a communist because of his mother knowing one.

(5,018 posts)I agree with most of his videos, but the way he presents it and the type of humor he uses will offend many DUers. Sometimes justifiably, but I'm glad some people like him are out there openly mocking some very privileged ideas ( religion).
If you don't understand the humor he uses or the fact that he goes after all religions then you'll probably not "get it", which is fine.

(5,018 posts)for most of his videos. He does take a "shock jock" approach sometimes, which I don't like, but some of his others he has done have been pretty funny (IMHO) and even a bit nuanced. Hopefully he matures into a bit more sophisticated of a social commentator, but I did stop following him about a year ago. I think most of his earlier stuff was in regards to religion, not sure if that is still the case.
His audience seems young, white, relatively liberal, but also pretty naive on a lot of topics not involving evangelical Christian religion (he seems to draw a lot of people who have struggled out of religion from evangelical backgrounds).

A gay person defending the rights of a religious minority even when that religion condemns gay people is akin to the well-worn axiom 'I may disagree with your point of view, but I'll defend your right to express it'. I obviously disagree with homophobic religious dogma, but I also agree people who hold those views have the same rights as anyone else.
