One Credit Suisse analyst just couldn't believe how much his Thanksgiving turkey cost at Stop & Shop

Credit Suisse analyst Robert Moskow can't believe how expensive his Thanksgiving turkey was this year.

On Hormel's fourth-quarter earnings call on Tuesday, Moskow opened his question to Hormel management by noting that he just bought his turkey at Stop & Shop.

And boy, was it expensive.

Here's Moskow, via Seeking Alpha: "Hey there. A great year, great two years in a row, so here is a question about turkey. I literally just bought our turkey at Stop & Shop $75, $3.12 a pound. I mean it seems like a shockingly high price."

Hormel CFO Jody Feragen joked that it was probably a Jennie-O, Hormel's turkey brand. Moskow did not confirm this, and followed up with a general question about profit guidance for the Jennie-O segment.

So not only did Moskow get in an anecdote about how much his Thanksgiving turkey cost, but he also got in a version of a "Great quarter, guys" comment.

In a way, this is the perfect earnings-call question.

Overall, Hormel's quarter was better than expected, with the company reporting adjusted earnings per share of $0.74 against expectations for $0.69.

But revenue was a bit light, coming in at $2.4 billion against expectations for $2.51 billion.

It's the Royal Ahold way. They do the same thing at their GIANT franchise.

Thank goodness the store I shop does not. Publix doesn't need gimmicks to get shoppers into that store and I am thankful.

I go all over hell so I have 'em from everywhere...Safeway, GIANT, Stop and Shop, Winn Dixie, etc.

Funny, though--I prefer the no-card stores.

Since that's Acme and Albertson's too, the whole chain may have dropped them. I didn't know about that until i went there and realized i didn't have the card in my wallet. I asked about getting a replacement or temporary and the lady told me i didn't need it anymore. All prices were the same for everybody. Then i saw the price on their beer and said to myself "Cool!"

expensive turkey I saw there was a 20-21 lb turkey for $65 no discount. I forget the brand but the turkey only ate vegetables. A bit concerned about what my turkey ate but I will be brining it so it should taste fine and hopefully not poison my guests.

Friday for .99 per pound. I use the loyalty card, as I do at the gas station, the sporting goods store and the marine supply.

Plus, I get the associate's discount because my son works in the deli department.

He's following in his father's footsteps. In 1967 I was working in the deli department at Waldbaum's and met the cutest little part time cashier. We've been together since.

then went on to a variety of odd jobs to accommodate my college schedule.

Where did you work? I was at store #68 in Lindenwood, Queens.

One of my co-workers at the time started at store #1 in Brooklyn when it first opened.

They're all converting to Stop & Shop now. The employees seem to be happy about it since they were not treated well by previous management.

Don't like to go into more detail than that online. In Queens, though.

Manager was an asshole. I actually quit right off the floor, threw the apron down sorta thing. I had had enough. Was a union shop.

two weeks ago. I had been making room in my freezer and just was able to fit
the 16 lb bird I bought for less than $10. in the freezer. It's been thawing in the
refrigerator since Sunday and will hopefully not need any cold water bath defrosting tomorrow
before roasting.
