Trump knows what the Republican base has become even if mainstream punditry refuse to acknowledge it

As much as they’ve awakened to the threat that Trumpism poses to their party, Republicans and the conservative intelligentsia lack the self-awareness—or perhaps the temerity—to acknowledge that though they now resent it, they’ve been courting it all along.
https://newrepublic.com/article/124632/gop-finally-emerging-trump-denialism

Trump hardly comes out of nowhere. There's really little about his ascent that is surprising at all if you've been paying attention to the direction of our politics in the last decade. I don't mean that I would have predicted he'd do this well. I didn't. What I mean is that the nature of his success, the effectiveness of his strategy and message, is entirely predictable. What Trump has done is taken the half-subterranean Republican script of the Obama years, turbocharge it and add a level of media savvy that Trump gained not only from The Apprentice but more from decades navigating and exploiting New York City's rich tabloid news culture. He's just taken the existing script, wrung out the wrinkles and internal contradictions and given it its full voice. There's very, very little that is new or unfamiliar in Trump's campaign beside taking the world of talk radio, conservative media and base Republican hijinx and pushing them to the center of the national political conversation. If you're surprised, it's because you haven't been paying attention.

It is Trump who has set the pace. His talent for manipulating the darkest emotions of the conservative id, while minimizing specific policy commitments, has been on full display. In every public appearance, he emitted new, authoritarian-sounding warnings. “We’re going to have to do things that we never did before. And some people are going to be upset about it, but I think that now everybody is feeling that security is going to rule,” he vowed. “We’re going to have to look at the mosques. We’re going to have to look very, very carefully.” Every new sound bite set off a profitable fervor of media speculation, forcing other candidates to raise the bidding or be left behind. “It’s not about closing down mosques,” insisted Rubio, placing himself rhetorically to Trump’s right, “it’s about closing down anyplace — whether it’s a café, a diner, an internet site — anyplace where radicals are being inspired.”

The tea-party movement had initially fashioned itself as wildly anti-statist. Now its advocates have veered into wild authoritarianism. None of this requires intellectual justification in lizard-brain America, and Trump, for now, is the Lizard King.

Look there are ReTHUGs and state. local and federal levels who think the same way.
Never forget Steve Scalise is their Majority Whip. How does the base differ from Bachman and Palin and that crazy one from Texas, Louie Gohmert. Cruz is in the fugging Senate.

and thus vulnerable to pushes that direction -- though many would fight back hard ifthey realized what was happening.

A good half of all conservatives, though, particularly social and strong religious conservatives, are almost synonymous with authoritarian followers. They're not just vulnerable -- they're not happy unless they have a strong leader to follow as they clean up all the "outliers" who are despoiling their land. (After all, Pol Pot didn't really kill millions of people, busy little strongman that he was.)

Note that threats always cause a majority of people to become more conservative and more authoritarian. They're eager for a strong, militaristic leader who'll rally them to protect through attack. A major terrorist attack on the U.S. between now and November 6 could be a really bad thing for democracy.

My guess is that this Jeb?'s biggest problem. He can't come across as the nationalistic, white-protectionist, Bible-waving strongman so much of the right is looking for, not just the base. Notably, authoritarians love the establishment and serve it unquestioningly when they think it's their establishment.

and switching to obedience mode is a major part of the danger authoritarians pose. I am wondering these days if the figure MUST always be white and male, or even Christian, any more though. Look at Cain and Carson. Look at conservatives for Romney and Sanders. Look at those who would be glad to vote for Fiorina over Hillary. Of course, it's far more likely to be than not.

Trump's white, male, and at least declared Christian. All thought of the general makes me nervous because of what is at stake, but I'm starting to smile a bit at the thought that it could be Trump on stage with Hillary.

The republican base hasn't become anything . They've always been this way but they were 'forced' to keep it to themselves. FOX, Limbaugh and other MSM have 'legitimized' this crap over the past few decades. Now we're at the point where it appears 'OK' to the frightened little bastards to express their deeply held racism.

I dont' know a republican personally that is not anti-Semitic and racist right down to their socks. Even the ones that claim to be kristian.

That's been my experience anyway.

Their base have been selfish isolationists for over a century.

It was somewhat controlled by the party's more moderate wing with more success in the past than recently. In recent years the base has brought its racism, homophobia, misogyny, nativism and xenophobia into full view. Their antipathy towards minorities, gays, women, immigrants, refugees and foreigners is plain for everyone to see.

The rest of their party has enabled this and, one hopes, will pay the price.

are people that would watch a Dallas Cowboys game and wonder who those Cheerleaders are rooting for; are they the guys in the Blue and White uniforms?

Seriously, the right has not only profited off the Trumps of the world, but also the George Zimmermans. Hell, they were trying to use Paris for every drop of political fuel. The difference is that the Jeb Bushes cannot admit they like this; they are the eternal "I read Playboy for the articles" types. What is scary is, in Germany, Hitler had to use the working class Brownshirts to gain power and establish his little geek elite, the Schutzstaffel. In "the night of the long knives" said Brownshirts got thrown under the Bus. Here, it seems the Billionaires are directly appealing to the thick necked brownshirts and offering the Bush Schutzstaffel as the people to throw under the Bus. Then again, why should this be a surprise, after all, in the 40's the Schutzstaffel like Goebbels made and directed the media machine, here, it is already pre made and pre driven by folks like Trump, who know EXACTLY what they are doing, and are capable of playing the media like a Harp.

Make no mistake about this, if ANY GOP gets in, especially Trump, this country will be a downward slide that makes the Reagan years look like FDR.
