I just received the $35 tablet from Amazon...

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00TSUGXKE/ref=s9_acss_bw_cg_odsbnc_1a1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=merchandised-search-3&pf_rd_r=00M9R2MTB9YP0BNQQS3D&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=2292050102&pf_rd_i=6669703011

here's the thing-the fricken' thing works! Now I am really not a techie and have never had another tablet to compare it to. Since I do have Amazon prime I can stream or download their content which means entertainment even out of wi-fi range. It comes with a browser that seems to work okay and apps that will take me weeks to get through. The thing is that for $35 I've got a nice sized unit I can put in my glove compartment and never be more than the nearest McD's from the net. Now a bunch of smart DUer's could tell you a pile of technical stuff that they understand a lot better than i can but I'll say this-for the price I am floored. I ordered on Thursday and got them (I actually purchased 2) this afternoon. I see on the add that they now are waiting for a shipment due on Dec. 20th so i'm not sure about delivery in time for Christmas. the link has a ton of info and reviews...

But -- they are practically giving them away... (of course, they have a certain interest in keeping you in the Amazon "ecosystem," too! )

If you have Amazon Prime you can get stuff while you are out of range of wifi, or do you mean you can download stuff while you are in range and watch or read content later when you are out of range?

I'm looking at a house that doesn't have access to wifi, so I am curious about which it is.

Amazon and workers' rights
and on a Democratic site - one which promotes the values of the Democrats, and with a strong labor advocacy on DU -
so without meaning to decrease your joy at your purchase and the good value,
I still think people should not buy from Amazon.

...but I'm going to have to leave that battle to others in a better shape to fight it. Amazon does 2 things important to me since I am on SSDI-they have deals that allow me to have things I could not otherwise afford and they deliver them to my door which is important when mobility is limited. Basically they are my virtual mall and my virtual personal assistant.

manufacturing worker rights and abuse. I want to get one for someone who has never had one and cant afford home wifi so thank you for the info . If you can give feedback here as you move forward with it please post another OP.
I use Amazon now because of where I now live but am moving to a new location area
I hope I can frequent community quality commerce.in my new place of living populated with peaceful people
Right now I live in a white red area and how I am treated out here is very different from other areas and I have lived many .

Another plus i have a business location for package delivery anyway but half the pick up now is for the purpose of no local interaction which is what we are avoiding . Amazon sells a lot of things , good price and has great delivery and I don't have to deal with racists shop clerks or co shoppers or bumper stickers that make me puke etc. It saves on the tires and gas

The UPS driver that drops them off is union if FT around here. Amazon warehouse needs support for workers rights not a boycott IMO

ALthough Amazon has strutted using uber type delivery , I had a uber delivery couldnt find the package dropoff site that UPS goes to everyday in a mall and had to call me . SO yeah Amamzon sucks in so many ways but lessor of two evils right now for me

I try not to but if it is a really good deal, that I could not afford elsewhere, I may.

but a lot of people don't know about Amazon, so I always bring it up, for folks who can afford to shop their conscience.
I know some of us can't always.

what gets me is some authors who write books, like "Save the working-class" or some-such and then sell it on Amazon.

I like to go to local shops and buy at farmer's markets. The real problem isn't Farmer Bob trying to make a living. It's the whole craptastic capitalist system that is the problem. We need to get rid of it, or at the very least reign it in. Regulation, taxation - that's how we stop them. It's either that or a full out revolution.

here is my answer:

we all do what we can do.
well... some of us do.

My computer is 10 years old, my tv and cassette tape player are 20 years old, I have no iphone, ipad, or any other "i"
I have a free phone of the most basic bec of my income.
I have a 35 mm camera which is over 20 years old.

I do not think it is a good idea to add toxins to the landscapes where poor children play with them.
I do not think it is a good idea to fund bloody chemicals from war-torn countries.

I don't care what you think about my life-style.
I answer to my conscience, not to yours.

but I have a question about yourself:

your reply shows you being defensive, sarcastic and aggressive.
do you find that a very good way to communicate?

with not buying from Amazon that I have encountered. I want to buy X. I tell myself I will not buy from Amazon and will go to the B&M. I go to the store to buy X, but they don't have it. I go to another store that used to have a good selection of X, but they only have the most popular X. I go to another store where I've seen a whole lot of X, but the the salesmen looks puzzled when I ask where the Xs are. After looking around for awhile he points out a stock of X, again, the most popular X and not the one I want. I have now spent the better part of a day looking for X and I still don't have X.

I come home and go on Amazon. Couple clicks later, there are several Xs in the kind I want. I order X from Amazon or one of its affiliates.

Off the top of my head, this has happened to me with:

Warm Mist Humidifiers
Aquarium supplies
Printer paper for photographs
Envelopes for cards made from above
Camera batteries
Clip-on sunglasses
Environmentally friendly suntan lotion
Travel Guides
Any number of music CDs

So what's a person with limited time to do?

I bought an Azpen Android tablet for $40. It's a POS. It was slow, not even as fast as my 3g iPod Touch. I went to a food themed website that I used to frequent, they had a huge makeover, and it apparently overwhelmed my crappy tablet. It crashed and so far, I h e not been able to revive it. I found a few sites that explain how to reload the firmware, but so far I have not been able to get it done.

I got one like this last summer when they first dropped in price to under $100 and bought one for a gift when they hit $50.

I know that Amazon is not a popular company here (often for good reason) but from a consumer perspective they are very good. The tablet I got last summer started having problems charging; I called customer service, they got the necessary info, then told me they were shipping me a new tablet (two day ship) and to return the old one, post paid, within a month...that was it, no drama.
