Sinead O'Connor threatened to commit suicide in a harrowing letter the singer posted on Facebook Sunday afternoon. In the letter, O'Connor focuses on "a horrific set of betrayals" she accuses her family of perpetrating against her. "I have taken an overdose," she warned. "There is no other way to get respect. I am not at home, I'm at a hotel, somewhere in Ireland, under another name. If I wasn't posting this, my kids and family wouldn't even find out."
According to BreakingNews.ie (via Billboard), the singer has since been found "safe and sound" and receiving medical assistance from Irish police. O'Connor's manager did not immediately return a request for comment. Read O'Connor's entire Facebook letter below:
Well done guys, you've finally got rid of me. Sorry the penny didn't drop sooner. I'm an idiot. When you planned to get me away from my babies did you plan for me losing my mind over it? It being the final straw? For how you're gonna explain why I died? Make sure you tell the truth. BARRY.. THEY WONT. YOURE THE ONLY ONE WHO KNOWS ME OR THE TRUTH. PLEASE STAND FOR ME AND TELL IT. I can't play twister. My children don't care if I live r die anyway. Neither do their dads. Everyone is better off. Never ever do this to a woman again. Let this be your lesson. I survived it when John Waters did it.. I can't survive Jake doing it.

On a 4 October 2007 broadcast of The Oprah Winfrey Show, O'Connor disclosed that she had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder four years earlier, and had attempted suicide on her 33rd birthday on 8 December 1999.[77] Then, on Oprah's "Where are they now?" show of 9 February 2014, O'Connor said that she had gotten three "second opinions" and was told by all three that she was not bipolar. In August 2015 she revealed that she was to undergo a hysterectomy after suffering with gynecological problems for over three years.[78]

(4,119 posts)She's always been odd but not in a quirky way...more of an uncomfortable to watch way. Last time I saw her on TV she had shaved head, odd tattoos. A pretty girl going out of her way to look ugly. Irish people are very loving and kind and if her family are keeping her children from her they must have a good reason.

(25,586 posts)That's just stupid. People all over the world span the full spectrum of decency and kindness. Irish families are no more or less likely to be loving and kind than any other families.

(10,715 posts)It would be heartbreaking to hear her go out that way...
Maybe lots of people think she was just an odd pop singer who had her day, but if you grew up under Reagan or Thatcher, back when everything was going all wrong and there was little that could be said about it, music was refuge. SInead O'Conner was brilliant, hauntingly beautiful, and inspiring, and continues to be. This was always one of my favorites, and hasn't lost its edge or its relevance:

(27,985 posts)I remember finding an unmarked cassette tape that belonged to my brother when I was 15. I couldn't stop listening to it. It was "The Lion and the Cobra" and I was hooked.
This has always been my favorite.

I'm not sure music -- perhaps because of how it's distributed/listened to now -- is as much a refuge today?
Regardless, best to Sinead, in becoming whole again.

(608 posts)it still is a refuge. Always has been, always will be.
That is, if music moves you. I am amazed that there are those unmoved by music - and there are.
I feel sorry for them.

(20,582 posts)Depression is not 'madness', and sometimes trying to appear strong isn't possible when life - and especially family, as she seems to believe - lets you down time after time. I don't know if she's been dx'd with it or not, but even the non-depressed reach their limits.
I'm glad she's been found and is getting help, I wish all the best for her.

(23,340 posts)more precisely in the foot courtyard at Farmer's Market in LA. At least 25 years ago.
A few minutes before that I saw a young woman at the foodcourt with a shaved head and thought, "oh, and now young woman are imitating Sinead o'Connor and shaving their heads!"
and a few minutes later I saw Sinead herself.
and later saw Kieffer Sutherland also in the crowd.
I hope Sinead happiness.
