(77,323 posts)So this is Christmas
And what have you done
Another year over
And a new one just begun
And so this is Christmas
I hope you have fun
The near and the dear ones
The old and the young
A very merry Christmas
And a happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one
Without any fear
And so this is Christmas (War is over)
For weak and for strong (If you want it)
For rich and the poor ones (War is over)
The road is so long (Now)
And so Happy Christmas (War is over)
For black and for white (If you want it)
For yellow and red ones (War is over)
Let's stop all the fight (Now)
A very merry Christmas
And a happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one
Without any fear
So this is Christmas (War is over)
And what have we done (If you want it)
Another year over (War is over)
And a new one just begun (Now)
And so Happy Christmas (War is over)
We hope you have fun (If you want it)
The near and the dear one (War is over)
The old and the young (Now)
A very merry Christmas
And a happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one
Without any fear
War is over if you want it
War is over now

Tom Lehrer A Christmas Carol:
One very familiar type of song is the Christmas Carol. Although it is perhaps a bit out of season at this time. However, I'm informed by my "disk jockey" friends - of whom I have none - that in order to get a song popular by Christmas time, you have to start plugging it well in advance. So here goes.
It has always seemed to me after all that Christmas, with it's spirit of giving, offers us all a wonderful opportunity each year to reflect on what we all most sincerely and deeply believe in. I refer of course, to money. And yet none of the Christmas carols that you hear on the radio or in the street, even attempt to capture the true spirit of Christmas as we celebrate it in the United States. That is to say - the commercial spirit. So I offer a modest example of a Christmas Carol for this year, as being perhaps a bit more appropriate.
Lyrics:
Christmas time is here, by golly,
Disapproval would be folly,
Deck the halls with hunks of holly,
Fill the cup and don't say "when."
Kill the turkeys, ducks and chickens,
Mix the punch, drag out the dickens,
Even though the prospect sickens,
Brother, here we go again.
On Christmas day you can't get sore,
Your fellow man you must adore,
There's time to rob him all the more
The other three hundred and sixty-four.
Relations, sparing no expense'll
Send some useless old utensil,
Or a matching pen and pencil.
"Just the thing I need! how nice!"
It doesn't matter how sincere it
Is, nor how heartfelt the spirit,
Sentiment will not endear it,
What's important is the price.
Hark the herald tribune sings,
Advertising wondrous things.
God rest ye merry, merchants,
May you make the yuletide pay.
Angels we have heard on high
Tell us to go out and buy!
So let the raucous sleigh bells jingle,
Hail our dear old friend kris kringle,
Driving his reindeer across the sky.
Don't stand underneath when they fly by.
However, when my cynicism dissipates, I turn to Bruce Cockburn's Cry of a Tiny Babe. My favorite lines are
...
For isn't to the palace that the Christ child comes
But to shepherds and street people, hookers and bums.
And the message is clear if you have ears to hear,
That forgiveness is given for your guilt and your fear.
It's a Christmas gift that you don't have to buy
There's a future shining in a baby's eyes.
Like a stone on the surface of a still river
Driving the ripples on forever
Redemption rips through the surface of time
In the cry of a tiny babe.

Two reasons: the songs have been played to death, and the older religious songs are much more beautiful as music.
Give me songs with a couple hundred years on them. They last because they are good.

(23,340 posts)What I dislike about many of these DU threads is the pride taken in musical illiteracy. This is not directed at what you have offered, but what often happens in Christmas music threads ... many boomers don't know any music that isn't rock or rock-related.
and some take pride in music that is both secular and really bad in order to take a dig at Christianity.
But most of the best comes from the religious tradition.
Here is one of my favorites, not that anyone here will listen to it.
