"A widening U.S. E. coli outbreak has slammed sales at Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc, the company said on Friday, hours after federal authorities reported that people in nine states have now contracted food poisoning.Shares in the popular burrito chain tumbled nearly 8 percent to $518 in extended trading after Chipotle warned that sales at established restaurants could drop 8 to 11 percent for the fourth quarter from a year earlier. This would be the first such decline in company history.
Investigators said the outbreak could widen again as local agencies upload data. Chipotle said in a regulatory filing that its sales could take more hits from "further developments, including potential additional announcements from federal and state health authorities."
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported related E. coli O26 illness in three new states. Forty-seven of the 52 people sickened say they ate at Chipotle before falling ill.

The company says it thinks the illnesses are an isolated incident unrelated to a multi-state outbreak of E. coli cases linked to its restaurants....
Late Monday, Chipotle said it was temporarily closing a restaurant in Boston's Cleveland Circle after Boston College said 30 of its students, including members of the men's basketball team, complained of gastrointestinal symptoms after eating at the chain. The school said it was working with health authorities to investigate the cause.
People can get norovirus from an infected person, contaminated food or water, or by touching contaminated surfaces, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The virus is very contagious and can spread quickly in places such as daycare centers and cruise ships, the agency says. Each year, it causes 19 to 21 million illnesses.
Well, that makes me feel a lot better!
A whole lot vomiting going on these days!
I'll just wave.

(8,245 posts)than just people who ate at the restaurant, it would be out in the community and school due to it being contagious

On the whole, the evidence is mixed. Initially, a pair of studies conducted in the 1980s with participants from France and Israel found that everyone produced the characteristic scent, and that a minority of people were simply unable to smell it. People with the ability to detect the scent, though, were able to smell it even in the urine of those who couldnt smell it, indicating that the differences were rooted in perception, not production.
More recent studies, though, suggest the issue is a bit more complicated. The most recent study, from 2010, found that differences existed between individuals in both the production and detection of the scent.
Overall, scientists now conclude that most of the difference is in perceptionthat is, if your urine doesnt seem to smell any differently after you eat asparagus, its likely that you simply cant perceive the sulfurous compounds foul odor, but theres a small chance its because your body digests asparagus in a way that reduces the concentration of these chemicals in your urine.
Its still unclear why some people dont produce the smell, but we do seem to have a clear explanation of why some people dont perceive it. In 2010, the genetic sequencing company 23andMe conducted a study in which they asked nearly 10,000 customers if they noticed any scent in their urine after eating asparagus, and looked for genetic similarities among those who couldnt. This peculiaritywhich you might consider useful if you eat asparagus frequentlyappears to stem from a single genetic mutation, a switched base-pair among a cluster of 50 different genes that code for olfactory receptors.

(21,691 posts)However, the asparagus pee smell - and skunk musk - is not noxious to me. I can smell asparagus pee quite well; mine and others; I have an exceptionally keen sense of smell. I just don't find it that offensive.
I can also nearly almost accurately guess which organism has caused my most recent kidney infection by scent.

(we meet for the second time today woo ooo ooo)
I love cilantro but coriander seeds kind of gag me. they are ok mixed with other spice, like for curry but I don't care to just chew on them.
I have the sensitive smell thing too, and skunk is fine (
) as long as it is further than 20 feet away. when I can feel the oil in my mouth it is too damn close (and there is one out on the back porch as I write this
)

(21,691 posts)Whole seeds would a bit too much.
We have a family of skunks under our deck. In the spring, there's always a new crop of kittens, and they have poor scent control, and go off randomly - right next to us (we pet the "wild" skunks - they're pretty friendly). Doesn't bother me. We put our coffee grounds on the roses, and apparently the skunks eat them because they all have very coffee-accented musk.
The raccoons DGAF about skunk musk, either; I've seen a skunk unload right in the face of a raccoon who wouldn't leave the skunk's food alone. Raccoon just kept on eating. When an adult is spraying for real, though, you can smell it all through the house.

After a short time after they were dicussing the matter, I said thanks and left. It wad ok, but is more food than I usually want.

(35,773 posts)Chipotle has chosen baseless demonization of safe foods as a marketing strategy. It's not ethical, and it shouldn't surprise anyone that it's customers leave, ASAP. When your customers were driven there based on fear mongering, they're going to leave at first sign of a scare.
Nevermind that the switch to non-GMO ingredients is actually bad for the environment.
