Liberty University Wants Students to Carry Weapons

5 p.m. Saturday update: While Friday’s convocation may have ended, the applause and criticism that came after Liberty University President Jerry Falwell Jr. urged students to get permits to carry concealed weapons has not.

The Washington Post, CNN, NBC, Esquire, Politico and several other news sources from around the country have picked up the story this weekend after Falwell’s remarks starting trending.

In a 2½-minute address before dismissing the students, Falwell urged students to take advantage of the university’s free class for concealed-carry permits as a way to counter attacks similar to the bloodshed in San Bernardino, California, on Wednesday.

“Let’s teach them a lesson if they ever show up here,” Falwell told the students.

since that crowd thinks the Wrath of Khan keeps falling on America for whatever-it-is-we-did-this-time: putting up lightning rods, or abolishing slavery, or using vaccines, or giving women the right to vote, or desegregating schools, or taking vitamin pills, or whatnot

Intentional shootings on campus and in the dorms will decrease their numbers.

(I'm being facetious.)

13. And how, tell me Mr. Falwell, are your students supposed to afford guns?

Good guns cost hundreds of dollars. Then there's ammo for target practice, range rental fees, holsters, cleaning supplies, an army helmet to wear in the firefight Falwell fantasizes about...

Last I checked most college students have a hard time finding money for food. How in HELL are they going to get the money to buy GUNS?

This is another reason we need to seriously step back and stop letting spree shootings dominate our gun policy discussion, because it leads to incredibly stupid and dangerous ideas like this.
