I took my own informal poll of the electorate. I stood by a local highway waving a Bernie sign with a group of Sanders supporters. I was there less than an hour- it started raining hard and we quit early. I saw three people flip a bird and one motorist gave us a thumb down. On the plus side, 50-100 people honked horns or waved. If you haven't done sign-waving before, this may sound good. However, I have done sign-waving for local candidates and for environmental causes and seldom encountered a single middle finger. The hostility doesn't bother me personally, but I think the phenomenon is noteworthy. There is a lot of blind hatred out there.
If the media has there way, we can expect a lot more. They have been waiting for San Bernadino and they will ride it off into the sunset. I stopped at a local McDonald's today for an afternoon coffee and saw the always-on Fox News channel headline: "ISIS radio station reports supporters made deadly CA attack." It doesn't say that ISIS planned or directed the attack or that the couple were agents or part of a cell. If viewers don't make the distinction, darn, that's just a shame. And we should ignore the fact that the attack was in the workplace of one of the perpetrators and that he had a recent argument with a messianic jewish co-worker. The story is ISIS, terrorism, ISIS.
We can forget about the Planned Parenthood attack. We can forget this year's homicide scorecard which reads: American gun-wielding homicidal maniacs 11,000, ISIS supporter and spouse 14. The story is and will be ISIS. Welcome to our Hatefest.

(7,646 posts)The sign-waving is always a good experience, especially when a lot of people show up. The occasional jerk doesn't bother me- I'm just puzzled by that level of hostility.

(493 posts)First off good job, I surely envisioned someone out there in a festive type mood having a good time.
I think sometimes we assume things like you stated in the above quote about "hatred". Just because someone flipped you the bird does not mean that they hate you nor Bernie. Who knows what was going on in the vehicle. Someone could of looked over, spilled there morning coffee, said "ah frig that damn sign flipper" and flipped you the bird for it.
I would not like to waste too much of my short precious life on hatin' time...I'd much rather laugh myself to death.
Now fuck of you asshole! (Ha, I jest!) Your sign flippin' (thread) got my attention...it worked, you got my response. And it's a receptive one.
