Bomb squad called in to OR to remove unexploded firework from man's chest

Bomb squad removes unexploded firework from accident victim's chest

A Linwood Township man is in critical condition after the St. Paul Bomb Squad removed an unexploded firework from his chest over the holiday weekend.

The 31-year-old apparently was shooting off illegal fireworks in the 6800 block of 225th Lane in Linwood Township about 9 p.m. Saturday, May 26, when a firework intended for the sky penetrated his chest, according to Cmdr. Paul Sommer, spokesman for the Anoka County sheriff's office.

He had placed two rounds in a mortar tube and was holding the tube when the first round shot up and exploded in the air as intended. The other came out the back, Sommer said.

The man fell to the ground, and two witnesses called 911. The man, whose identity wasn't released, was taken by ambulance to Regions Hospital in St. Paul. Medical staff were operating on his wound when they noticed the unexploded round still in his chest. The bomb squad was called in to remove the live round.

And should be as safe as any legally purchased fireworks.

you could practically buy dynamite in SC. They still sell more powerful stuff here than in other places. You can buy the nastier stuff if you know who to talk to.
Our parents bought us everything and never said a word to us. They just handed them over and off we went. I wondered if they were trying to thin the herd of young cousins.

When I was a kid, my friends used to get fireworks. It was always the same friends every year. There was no shortage of explosives for us to play with. People used to say that they got them in "Chinatown" in NYC. That may be true, but I've never gone looking.

I've seen more firework shops in some states than 7/11's. One time I found a fireworks shop near Knoxville, TN. I couldn't resist buying some goodies which I used in a neighboring hotel parking lot.

Here in my county you can by fireworks that no other county in my state will allow.
He may very well have bought them legally, but he shot them off illegally, and it sounds like one of them was loaded backwards.

Subject: Live Artillery Shell

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have a butt page story for you, but, unfortunately, no documentary evidence. The story was told me by my brother, who used to lodge with a nurse. It is the nurse's story. About five years ago an old WW2 veteran used to come into a hospital clinic in the east end of London suffering from bad haemorroids (piles). The clinic did what they could, but they could never relieve the most painful pile, which would hang down and get stuck on the seam of the man's underpants. To rid himself of the nuisance of this pile, the old man used to push it back up into his rectum using the artillery shell from an anti-aircraft gun he used to man in the war. One day the shell got stuck and the man was forced to hobble down to the hospital to get it removed. As the doctor was about to insert his fingers into the old man's rectum to remove the shell he said 'Of course, this shell is spent, isn't it?' 'Oh no,' said the old man 'There's enough ammo in that shell to blast a Messerschmidt (sp?) out of the sky.' So the doctor called in the army bomb squad, who built a lead box around the old man's asshole and defused the shell in situ, before removing it.
A good little story for VE day, I thought. --

That was his big mistake. The instructions clearly say and show, only put one at a time into a mortar.
