Who believe they won whatever argument they were making because I stopped responding to them...
I just want to make it clear that as soon as I recognized you as an intellectually dishonest person, I added you to my ignore list.
Maybe to you that's a victory; but to me it's just good common sense not to waste an ounce of energy by even reading your posts - much less by responding to them.
This post is not for you, it's for anyone else who has interacted with you, as an encouragement to do the same rather than wasting their own time and energy.

(9,497 posts)and I have reversed my decision never to alert. Anything vile or personal will not be getting a pass from me anymore. I think they feel emboldened to go even more over the edge.
Kalidurga
(14,177 posts)a post has to be pretty vile for me to alert. The last one was some very over the top racism. To say I was shocked would be an understatement, I was actually seriously t'd off for a couple hours.
artislife
(9,497 posts)It was pretty personal and rather vile.
And that is when I decided that I wasn't going to sit by when others were targeted either. So I have one alert and it got a jury who all agreed with me.
I am not going to alert because I disagree, just personal (not necessarily directed at me) and rather vile.
I am done.
Kalidurga
(14,177 posts)I have never alerted on a post directed at me though, no matter how vile. I have seen a few name removed after my posts though.

(23,720 posts)I'd hate to think how lonely I'd be if I had to put everyone on ignore.
If there's no one whose thoughts I'd want to hear because I deem them flawed- what would be the point in me even showing up?

It's like a boycott where a whole group of people think they are making a change when they only managed to reduce the sales of a company by 1/10th of 1%, similar to the effect that people who quit Netflix had when Netflix raised prices.

I'll enjoy my time on ignore. It's quite pleasant here, where I only get a response about once a week, and they're usually pleasant people.

Still don't get it.
I do still get lots of responses, and they're not always pleasant (you, for example) but simply being unpleasant is not enough by itself to put you on ignore.
I don't think I'm bragging about anything here -- if I was part of a community that included nobody worth ignoring, now that would be worth bragging about. As it is, if anything I'd say it's the people who always have to point out that they've NEVER put ANYONE on Ignore that are the "humblebraggers."

(3,041 posts)Was someone who responded to my thread professing my love for Muslims as human beings like any other, saying that I must immediately commit to putting up a family of Syrian refugees in my home otherwise my statement was suspect or meaningless or both. They proceeded to respond another 20-ish times in the thread (I did not bother to read more than the first couple of their posts). This was not the first time I've dealt with them so it's not like I rushed to judgment - I had seen this type of thing from them before.

(82,383 posts)that is a pure Libertarian talking point. I have argued about it with real life Libertarians. They are so anti-government, they don't believe society even exists. There should be no collective. Thus they don't get the difference between our country supporting something as a country, or with taxes, and personally doing a thing.
They will argue you should be willing to have the homeless in your home. They often emphasis you, as in that thread. YOU should do it then (because they don't want to or to have their precious tax money - which they think of as "theft" from them - used in any way to help the homeless). Ayn Rand talking point -she said that you are free to help anyone else, but no one should be "forced" to by a law.

(11,619 posts)so I have my say and then go to another thread.
Besides, pointless argument is used to push up the number of replies and keep certain threads at the top.
This is especially true in threads that say outrageous and insulting things.

(14,040 posts)I do the ignoring by just, you know, ignoring. If I see posts from certain folks... I just ignore them. Amazing how that works really.

(60,139 posts)There are PLENTY of posts I ignore, but never a person posting. You never know when they might have something interesting to say. I ignore posts with the words "unelectable, oligarch, corporatist or corporate" in them, as I know in advance what they'll say, and don't need to read that argument for the 999th time. But I never ignore a person.
I did alert--one time and one time only--to an offensive post by an obvious right wing troll. I was told by the jury to fuck off and grow a thicker skin. The poster I alerted on was banned within a few hours, as he/she/it was quickly pegged for the right wing intruder that he/she/it was, but that cured me once and for all of the DU jury system. I very recently saw one juror comment posted saying that they thought (either the alerter or the alertee, I forget) was some kind of right wing intruder--which didn't at all appear to be the case. And even so--a juror doesn't like a poster, therefore he/she deserves to be ruled against for that very reason? That's like having George Wallace sit on the jury of To Kill A Mockingbird. If THAT'S ok, then, like Elizabeth Warren says, "the system is rigged." No thanks.
treestar
(82,383 posts)I'd only alert of actual ad hominem but no success. Some posters are just allowed to make ad hominem posts.

(60,139 posts)Some people take advantage of the fact that "get a life" can't be enforced in a court of law (or on DU). They are usually a lot more uncomfortable in their own skin than I am in mine. They have to live with themselves when they turn off their computers. I don't.

(1,587 posts)I have hand issues, and scrolling just wears my thumb out. So, to make it easier on myself, I put people on ignore who are trolls, ignorant or hateful. Works for me.
Now, when Bernie is president, I'll clear my list and listen to the crickets from all those who swear they'll support the nominee/president, no matter who it is.
