GA school says teacher had no ‘ill intent’ asking Muslim student if she had a bomb in her backpack

A Georgia middle school teacher is not facing any repercussions after she asked a Muslim 8th grader if she had a bomb in her backpack, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution is reporting.

Saying there was no “ill intent” involved, the unidentified teacher at Shiloh Middle School in Gwinnett County was only told by school administrators that her comments were “not appropriate,” which has the father of the girl disgusted with the whole incident.

“I was upset,” explained the girl’s father, Abdirazik Aden, who owns a business in the area. “I was going to take my daughter out (of that school). “

According to Aden, his daughter was stopped on Monday by the teacher who asked the young girl what she had in her book bag. After the girl replied “books,” the teacher inquired further, asking if she had a bomb in the bag.

Aden said his daughter called him afterwards upset with the line of questioning. .............(more)

Yes, those little "off-handed" remarks of bigotry that fall so comfortably off the lips of racists. Solly Mack Dec 2015 #5

Teachers are in a unique position to get to know the children of immigrants, and realize they are just like any other children.

I don't think the teacher should be fired. The publicity has undoubtedly driven home the point. Hopefully that teacher apologized to the girl.

Sloan Roach and Eli Welch claim no "ill-intent" was meant because they can't recognize their own prejudices. They don't recognize it because they agree with it, and just think it a fact instead of what it is - bigotry.

Roach, Welch and the teacher all believe that all Muslims are terrorists, so it's OK to ask a child if she has a bomb in her backpack. Not rude or offensive in their minds - just the truth. I'm sure the teacher inquires of all the white kids if they have a cross, matches, and an accelerant in their packs.

The soft-spoken, all too clueless and achingly polite bigotry found in the day to day interaction with the ignorant, where poison flows so readily from the tongues of those who can't see the damage they are causing. And they don't want to see it either.
