Our nation is under siege, Chris Christie declared after the San Bernardino murders. Were facing the next world war. Other candidates issued their own battle cries. Donald Trump railed against Muslims. Gun sales surged.
These murders were an act of senseless violence. But the California shootout wasnt part of a war. Have our shores been invaded? Is there any risk that the Islamic State will take over our country?
The United States isnt threatened because one Muslim couple murdered 14 people in San Bernardino. The attack was tragic, but no more outrageous than the brutal murders in Roseburg, Oregon, where a 26-year-old white man killed nine college students this fall, nor those in Charleston, South Carolina, where a 21-year-old white man murdered nine churchgoers this summer.

(7,512 posts)if you strapped them down and forced them to watch Ken Burns' The War all the way through, A Clockwork Orange style. They love the idea of war so much, but never want to be in one themselves. The perception that you're in a war is a powerful thing. It does two things, it makes them money and makes them popular. George W Bush, as dumb as that fucker was, he at least understood that.

Fear of Muslims, fear of gays, fear of blacks, fear of the gubmint grabbing their guns, fear of not being able to force their religion on others. Fear is the stock in trade of Republican politicians. Without that, they'd be out of a job.
