(65,042 posts)That's when Reagan started blustering about the "Evil Empire" and his hagiographers declared he won the cold war, when the real winners of the cold war were Lech Walesa and Ted Turner.

(73,537 posts)This is a very important point. I suspect that the public is so accustomed to this chichen-hawk dynamic, that they don't consciously think of it these days. Therefore, it is essential that people remind them. Frequently.
Thanks for this OP!

(41,692 posts)I have never disparaged those who have not.
I do disparage those who yell let's go to war ----24x7---but have never served in the military.
That has always bothered me in a big way.
I definitely agree with you on this.
I was "of age" during the Vietnam War. I would have refused to serve then, because I knew the war was immoral. (After the war ended, some recruiters attempted me to join to be part of the boxing team. I did give that serious consideration. But Rubin advised me to enter college instead. Plus, they insisted that I'd have to cut my hair, which would have violated my religious beliefs.)
I do not judge anyone as "better" or "worse," based upon if they were in the military. But I could puke when shitheads like Dick Cheney et al are pro-war.

(73,537 posts)I have no difficulty in viewing Muhammad Ali as a "hero," just as I do the many family members and friends who served.
But the chicken hawks? They are very low, indeed.

Donald Trump might not be an actual veteran, but the Republican presidential candidate claims he "always felt that I was in the military," thanks to his time at a military-themed boarding school.
In an interview for the forthcoming biography Never Enough, the man who has upended the 2016 presidential race talked in typically blunt terms about how his high school years spent at New York Military Academy provided him with "more training militarily than a lot of the guys that go into the military," according to quotes provided to The New York Times.
Trump, 69, entered the school located near West Point Military Academy in 1959 in the eighth grade at the insistence of his parents because of his poor behavior back home in Queens, and remained there through high school.
Later, the burgeoning real estate mogul received multiple deferments during the Vietnam War followed by a high draft number, and told biographer Michael Mr. D'Antonio that even though he never officially served, his training at the school was in keeping with the rigors of military life.
