Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, recommended that President Obama establish a no-fly zone in Syria to protect refugees and those the U.S. have trained and are supporting against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS).
"I would say as Hillary Clinton has recommended and David Petraeus before the Senate Armed Services Committee recommended, and that is we establish a no-fly zone. And we have a buffer zone," he said in an interview on PBS's "Charlie Rose" that aired Monday night.
Clinton, Obama's former secretary of State and the 2016 Democratic presidential front-runner, made the recommendation last Tuesday during the first Democratic debate, setting herself apart from other less hawkish candidates.
She said she supported the establishment of such zones to gain leverage on Russian President Vladimir Putin, who began an airstrike campaign in Syria last month to shore up ally President Bashir Assad.

I soooo hope this comes up in the 'no one will be watching', final saturday before Christmas, debate. Specifically Ms. Clinton, will you order the shoot down of Russian jets should they cross into your, without legal authority, 'no fly zone'?

(59,503 posts)a new meaning for no fly zone. Sort of like the new Cruz definition of carpet bombing - when it is clear that the normal meaning of the word suggests something few would be comfortable with.
I just hope that the long short of a political solution that Kerry has worked diligently on and which has a stated goal of a ceasefire by January means that real life takes that horrendous possibility off the table long before January 2017.
(In fact, could the likelihood of a more hawkish US in 2017, be an incentive to get political settlements in conflicts before 2017 in places other than Israel, which likely hopes it will get more under someone else?)

(36,418 posts)would be proud. But, because there is still some sort of rough balance of terror with Russia, nobody's suggesting that. Yet.
BTW: Did you see the article that Turkey and Israel are reestablishing diplomatic relations? A few weeks ago, the UAE openly announced it now has commercial ties with Israel. There's a realignment going on, or is just that nobody thinks that old fictions count anymore?
A more hawkish US in 2017? If we really think diplomacy and trade works, how about taking this opportunity to unfreeze the New Cold War and work out a deal with Moscow? Imagine the possibilities if we really worked together to calm the Mideast?

The hasn't been right about a thing in Syria yet guy agrees with HRC?
This is the company that idea keeps:
A number of Republican Presidential candidates have advocated for the NFZ, including Bobby Jindal, Carly Fiorina, and Chris Christie.
PBO has stated:
When I hear people offering up half-baked ideas as if they are solutions, or trying to downplay the challenges involved in this situation what Id like to see people ask is, specifically, precisely, what exactly would you do, and how would you fund it, and how would you sustain it, Obama said at a press conference. And typically, what you get is a bunch of mumbo-jumbo.

(7,675 posts)As for the no fly zone that's a fait accompli since the Russians started their bombing campaign
I don't think Clinton has to have an opinion about it since she is outside the policy loop
My guess is she would see a no fly zone as irrelevent at this point
